In March 1998 a powerful art installation was installed on Bondi Beach by ANTaR, the Australian Artists Against Racism and Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation. Featuring over 100, 000 hands painted in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait flags, the artwork was created as a physical representation of protest against the Howard government's Native Title Strategy. The Bondi Beach Sea of Hands was part of an ongoing public art protest that began in Canberra in 1997, and hand artworks appeared across Australia as the movement grew. At Bondi Beach, one of the hands read “Sorry begins with me." Sea of Hands at Bondi Beach, 1998. Photograph by Juno Gemes, image courtesy of NLA.
