Our construction sites on State Highway 3 between Awakino and Mt Messenger are temporarily shutting down

Dear Customer

In line with the Government’s direction in response to COVID-19 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the contractors and suppliers working on our behalf are stopping work on all capital projects effective from 23:59 hours on Wednesday 25 March 2020.

Our priority at this time is to ensure that while we close down the sites, they remain safe places for you to travel through or near. We will keep safe traffic management in place, as well as appropriate environmental controls.Throughout the closure you can be assured that we will continue to monitor the site and that safety remains our top priority.

You may have questions about what this closure will mean for project completion dates. We are still working to establish this information, and we will keep you updated on this website and in future updates.

Waka Kotahi remains committed to keeping New Zealanders moving and we will resume work as soon as we can.

Awakino Tunnel Bypass
Construction work has stopped and the traffic management that has been in place since late last year will remain operating. This means traffic lights at either end of the worksite, which will be monitored daily to ensure they are operating correctly.

Bexley Quarry Retaining Wall – Awakino Gorge
The retaining wall will be temporary backfilled today and the road reinstated to two lanes. Concrete barriers will remain to protect the drop off and there will be a temporary speed limit of 50km/hr in place.

Ladies Mile Passing Lane
We need to do some further work at this site to ensure it is in a safe state for the coming weeks so work will continue until Monday 30th March. Over the next couple of days our contractor will complete stabilisation, compacting, chip sealing and line marking.

Minimal traffic management will remain in place over the shutdown such as discrete areas of shoulder closures.

Please take care travelling through the site and keep to the posted speed limit.
