1. Directional signs are going up

Story
Story

The familiar white-on-green highway signs are being erected along the expressway edges, announcing on-ramps and off-ramps. Chevrons and other signs are going up at interchanges where local traffic joins the expressway. And the first big gantry signs – the ones suspended above the highway – are due to go up at the Southern Interchange when Covid-19 restrictions allow. That’s 700 directional signs across the full 22km site.

2. Final seal at Resolution Interchange

Three asphalt teams will be working simultaneously this summer to lay the remaining 60,000 tonnes of final seal. Two teams have been working through the winter on ramps, roundabouts and local road connections. As the weather warms up in spring, they will be back laying long strips of asphalt on the expressway lanes. The video below shows final surfacing being laid at the Resolution Interchange roundabouts.

3. Safe passage for walkers and cyclists

The walking/cycling underpass that will run under the extension to Resolution Drive is almost complete. The video below shows staff tying the reinforcing steel for the final section of floor, and taping the joints before covering the structure with a waterproof membrane. Once this work is finished, the road will be built on top.

4. Traffic switches ahead

A series of SH1 traffic switches will affect Tamahere residents and commuters over the next few months. First, traffic lanes will be shifted at the Southern Interchange to provide room to build a large gantry over the expressway to carry large directional signs. Then the Bollard Road temporary intersection with SH1 will be closed and local traffic moved onto their permanent access over the East West Link Road. Timeframes are yet to be confirmed following the Covid-19 project shutdown.

The photo below shows the East West Link Road – the permanent access to and from Cherry Lane, Bollard Road and Tamahere Eventide retirement village.
