SH1 Taupō to Turangi overnight closures

State Highway 1 between Taupō and Turangi will be closed overnight for five nights from 12 October for asphalting around Te Pōporo/Bulli Point. The road needs to be closed as it is too narrow for the machinery and crew to work and also safely allow a lane of traffic through.

When the closure starts at 7pm each night only residents will be able to access SH1 south of the Taupō Airport roundabout, or north of the SH1/SH41 in Turangi until the road reopens at 6am.

Emergency services will have full access through the work site if required.

Important detour information:

  • From Turangi, the northbound detour will be via State Highway 41, on to State Highway 32 and then Poihipi Road to Taupō. Through traffic heading north should use SH32 to Tokoroa. The southbound detour will be in reverse.
  • For a journey between Turangi and Taupō the detour will add an extra 40 to 45 minutes over and above the normal 45-minute journey time via SH1 Turangi to Taupō. The total travel time is approximately 1.5hrs.
  • While the road closure will be in place from 7pm we would encourage motorists to complete their travel well before then as the contractors will be setting up traffic management from 6pm and this may cause delays.

The work is scheduled to be finished on the night of Friday 16 October.

East Taupō Arterial safety improvements

Work to repair the Centennial Drive intersection of the East Taupō Arterial (ETA) is progressing well, completion expected on Wednesday 14 October.

The Broadlands Road southbound on/off ramps also need to be closed for similar repairs, and to minimise disruption we will do this after the work at Centennial Drive is complete.

This closure is planned to take place from Sunday 1 November and is expected to take around 12 days to complete.

Detours will be in place and clearly signposted, directing road users to use the Centennial Road intersection. This detour will add approximately 3-4 minutes to a journey. The northbound on/off ramps will remain open and are unaffected by the closure.

Besides repairing the ramps, we’re currently working on a short section of the ETA between the Waikato River and State Highway 5 Napier/Taupō Road, where we’re widening the road shoulder.

When the weather starts to warm up, activity on site will ramp up and longer sections of the shoulder will be widened. Once all the road widening is completed, the whole road will be resealed across the entire width, new flexible median barriers installed, and new road markings applied.

You’ll see signs, cones, shoulder closures and temporary speed limits in place to keep our work crews and road users safer. There will always be two-way traffic flow as the work is off to the side of the road. We’ll do our best to minimise delays and disruption for people using the state highway.

Visit Waka Kotahi’s Journey Planner website for up to date information on up to date information on road or lane closures, detours, road works, traffic and delays.

The project covers a 12km stretch of SH1, between the Wairakei roundabout and the SH5 Napier/Taupō Road roundabout.

SH30 closed at Ongaroto bluffs

State Highway 30 between Atiamuri and Whakamaru will be closed until Thursday 8 October during the day, to allow for the cliff face to be inspected.

A team of geotechnical experts are abseiling down the cliff to inspect the rock face and remove any potential hazards, including a number of pine trees.

This means that SH30 is closed from 7am to 5pm, with traffic diverted between SH1 and SH32 through Tokoroa.

If any unsafe rocks or trees are identified and can't be removed the same day, the road may need to remain closed overnight.

Anyone planning a journey along SH30 outside of the stated closure hours is encouraged to check our journey planner, visit our social media pages or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS for up to date traffic and travel information.
