Special Projects 2023Te Māngai Pāho seeks full proposals for the creation of fluent and receptive content and campaigns that continue promoting important kaupapa Māori in 2023 for Aotearoa audiences to distribute via platforms with marketing and distribution support, or platforms that have an established audience with a distribution plan attached. We are looking to fund innovative content and campaigns across multiple platforms that focus on Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, as well as Matariki 2023, but are open to other kaupapa content creators may think are important to audiences this year. We expect to see all kaupapa continue to champion the use of te reo and tikanga Māori in innovative, accessible ways on screen to help change attitudes and behaviours across Aotearoa. Māori musicWaiata reo Māori funding recipientsWe are pleased to announce the results of the third Waiata Reo Māori funding round. 15 waiata have been funded. Pūtea will go towards the production and promotion of the waiata. Waiata Tuarea Funding Round open nowFunding is available for the production and promotion (including aligned video assets) of multiple waiata intended for an EP or album. A minimum of three songs are required for Waiata Tuarea funding; each being original, previously unreleased, and containing more than 50% reo Māori. Origin Roots Aotearoa (O.R.A) has released He Reo ORA, its first full reo Māori EP. Coming off the back of a successful Te Matatini campaign for two members, Erena and Eugene Temara who stood with Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Whakaue and were 2nd equal overall - the rōpū from Rotorua is riding this positive wave. Te Māngai Pāho supports creating a safer and more inclusive music industry. SoundCheck are running free Professional Respect Training which focuses on content, skills and tools to effectively prevent and respond to sexual harm in workplaces. Ngā Aho Whakaari Industry Hui 2023Ngā Aho Whakaari are hosting their industry hui this Friday, 24 March 2023. Open to all in the industry, this event is a chance to get together and hear the latest updates. Te Matatini Herenga Waka Herenga TangataAfter a four-year hiatus, and 21 years since it was last held in Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Matatini Herenga Waka Herenga Tangata showcased the best kapa haka Aotearoa has to offer over the four-days at Eden Park. We congratulate everyone who took part, particularly ngā toa whakaihuwaka, Te Whānau-a-Apanui! We also wish highlight our two kaimahi, Juneea Silbery and Blake Ihimaera, who stood for their kapa Te Rangiura o Wairarapa and Angitu, making them the first kaimahi from Te Māngai Pāho to stand at Te Matatini in over 20 years. More than 1.8 million people tuned in to watch the festival on TVNZ, with 730,000 watching the live broadcast and 188,000 streamed it on TVNZ+. Te Māngai Pāho also funded Ngāti Hine FM who delivered the Haka Translate service for Te Matatini. Haka Translate was broadcast globally in six languages (English, Mandarin, Fijian, Tongan, Sāmoan and Cook Island Māori). M9On the 21st February, M9 held their third event - Taku Ihi, Taku Wehi, Taku Wana: Kapa Haka - A performer's perspective. This was a successful night and included many speakers from our own industry. You can watch the videos of each of the speakers on the NZHerald Kāhu website. #MARANGA - RISE UP AOTEAROA#MARANGA – RISE UP AOTEAROA unites New Zealanders in a national live fundraiser to raise funds for our communities and families hit by Cyclone Gabrielle. Across eight hours New Zealand musicians will perform in a free outdoor concert which, with the support of NZ On Air and Te Māngai Pāho, Whakaata Māori will record and stream live to the nation on 25 March 2023, 11am-7pm. On the final weekend of summer, March 25 — 26 enter the portal and witness a creative world full of colourful characters and culture. NZ Web FestNZ Web Fest’s early bird deadline is 31 March. The ninth edition of the festival runs in November, and celebrates web series, podcasts and - this year, for the first time - short films. ScreenSafe Professional Respect Training Workshop - 9am - 5pm, Friday 31 March, Tāmaki Makaurau,The ScreenSafe/SWAG Professional Respect Training Project was developed to support WORKSAFE's health & safety guidelines around harassment. The course will address predominately sexual harassment and also includes bullying, harassment, definitions, disclosures, and respectful behaviours in the workplace. Be a part of this screen sector culture change and help make the sector a safe environment for everyone. The initiative designed and implemented by ScreenSafe and SWAG, and with the financial support from NZ Film Commission, NZ on Air and Te Māngai Pāho.
