CLP Government focused on safety and reform

20 June 2025

The Finocchiaro CLP Government has reaffirmed its commitment to community safety, with new crime statistics showing material improvements in key property crime categories across the Territory.

The latest figures, comparing January to April 2024 to January to April 2025 compared to the same period last year, highlight meaningful reductions in robbery and break-in offences, particularly in Darwin, Alice Springs and Nhulunbuy.

Across the Territory:

  • Robbery offences are down 34%
  • House break-ins (burglary – dwelling) are down 33%
  • Commercial break-ins (burglary – non-residential) are down 18%
  • Theft (excluding vehicles) is down 16%

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the results were encouraging but reinforced the need to keep pushing ahead with reform.

“These numbers show that our plan is working. We’re seeing real reductions in robberies, house break-ins and other property crimes, but there’s still more to do,” she said.

“We promised action, certainty and security, and we’re delivering it through strong laws and visible policing.”

Significant local results include:

  • In Darwin, house break-ins are down 48%, robberies down 40%, and total offences down 14%
  • In Alice Springs, house break-ins have dropped 41%, and commercial break-ins are down 29%
  • Nhulunbuy recorded a 77% drop in house break-ins and 74% drop in commercial break-ins

While property crime has declined, the data shows assault-related offences, particularly domestic and alcohol-related assaults, remain a serious challenge, with rises in several regions.

Over the past fortnight, the CLP Government has delivered two significant law and order reforms:

  1. The establishment of Police Public Safety Officers (PPSOs) – a new, high-visibility unit of sworn officers targeting antisocial behaviour in public places including shopping centres, bottle shops, buses, and public housing precincts.
  2. Introduction of OC Spray trial – giving Territorians more choice when it comes to personal safety.

“Our government will always back the frontline with the powers they need to do their jobs safely and ensure Territorians have the protection they deserve to feel safe in their community,” the Chief Minister said.

“We are also unapologetic about using the full force of the law when it comes to serious repeat offenders. Since forming government in August 2024, more than 600 individuals have been taken off the streets, sending a clear message that under a CLP Government, we put the rights of victims before offenders.”

“We have more work to do, and we will keep building on this progress to reduce crime and restore the Territory lifestyle.”
