Thames - CoromandelState Highway 25 and State Highway 25A, road works and potential impacts to journeys. Work underway SH25 Kūaotunu: Underslip repairs are underway and Kūaotunu Hill is reduced to a single lane. While work is ongoing the road is expected to remain open with lane shifts, however some short-term closures may be needed. Traffic management and speed restrictions are in place. The repairs are due to be completed in December. SH25 Whangamatā: Repairs to a bridge on the outskirts of Whangamatā mean a closure and short detour is now in place until about Tuesday 9 December. Urgent deck work is needed on the Moana Anu Anu Bridge (also known as the Wentworth Bridge) on SH25. The bridge closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, on Wednesday 29 October. The closure runs 24/7. The detour through Whangamatā uses Mayfair Avenue and Martyn Road, due to council watermain works on the usual detour route via Port Road and Hetherington Road. The detour adds a few minutes to normal journey times. |

South WaikatoDelays across SH5: People travelling along SH5 between Tīrau and Rotorua during October will encounter three seperate work sites - SH5/SH28 roundabout construction; road maintenance at SH5 near Waiohotu, and road rebuilding at SH5 Tārukenga. People should expect delays and plan ahead. Work underway SH1 Tokoroa to Ātiamuri: Work continues on Stage 1 between the SH1/SH32 intersection at Tokoroa to the SH1 Kinleith intersection, with an overnight closure in place. The detour is via SH32, Old Taupō Road, Kinleith Road and vice versa. This detour adds approximately 5km and 5 minutes to travel time. Bad weather has meant several shifts have been lost in this area so crews will also be working tonight, Friday 22 November. Stage 2 of work is now scheduled to start Thursday 27 November. This may be pushed out again because of bad weather and will happen on the next available fine night. For Stage 2, SH1 between the SH1/SH32 intersection the SH1/SH30 intersection will be closed overnight between 7pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday nights. The detour is via SH32, SH30 and back to SH1 at Ātiamuri and vice versa. This adds approximately 33.6km and 27 minutes to journey times. SH1 Waitahanui: Overnight stop/go is in place at Waitahanui for asphalting. Work is between 7pm and 6am. There are temporary speed limits in place during the day. Please prepare for some delays in this area while work is happening. Traffic is being managed through the site under speed restrictions with some stop/go. The in-road weigh-in-motion scales on the 5 roads heading towards the safety centre have been installed. Work on camera technology and electronic sign boards is progressing. Work in the lanes has largely finished, apart from an occasional lane closure for a day, but continues on the road shoulders. More information SH5/SH28 Harwoods Road: Construction of a roundabout at this intersection east of Tīrau is underway. Traffic is being managed through the site with speed restrictions but access in and out of SH28 at the worksite is now closed until Wednesday 17 December. There is a detour via SH27 and SH29. Fly tipping - a dirty little habitIllegal rubbish dumping along Waikato's state highways has become an increasingly frustrating and unpleasant problem. It’s a problem that’s not just unsightly, but dangerous and costly. Our maintenance contractors, who are responsible for keeping our Waikato safe and functional, are spending increasing amounts of time cleaning up everything from food waste and broken bottles to full rubbish sacks and applicances. Not only does this endanger road users and workers, it also undermines the efforts of our crews who work hard and take pride in maintaining our regions roads. Our network operations crews are clearing dumped rubbish daily. It’s a smelly, dirty job that takes their attention away from more critical tasks like repairing potholes and maintaining the road. While the exact cost of cleaning this rubbish up is hard to quantify, dumping a full trailer load will cost several hundred dollars per tonne, and some sites stretch into the thousands. This is not to mention the cost for vehicles and crew required to spend lengthy times clearing this up. That’s money, and time, which is already limited, that could be better spent maintaining and improving the road, providing a better journey experience for our communities and those who come to visit this beautiful part of the country. We’re urging people to to do the right thing. Instead of littering, dispose of rubbish in the bin or take it home with you if a bin isn’t available. If you witness fly tipping, you can report it to NZ Police or call NZTA on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49). While our contractors can’t issue fines, they can pass information on to local councils who can. The safety of both road users and our contractors is our highest priority. Let’s be responsible and work together to keep our highways clean, safe and efficient. Waikato River trails - rubbish dumped March 2025.. |
