Baum-kuchen Love Letter // Weight of our Analogue Artifacts

Weight of our Analogue Artifacts

Greetings from the autumn season in the canyon. This past month, we finally moved into our still-under-construction house. Rain was coming into the forecast, and we hectically moved everything out on the deck to the corners of the semi-finished rooms. I was grateful that some of the rooms were finished enough to sleep under the roof. Yet, at the same time, I missed the open sky living immensely. I loved to fall asleep under the stars, be keenly aware of elements in the air, and notice the changing moon phases every night.

For our family, today marks the year of transition. It was exactly a year ago when we decided to sell our house in Pasadena and let go of many of the material objects we owned as a family. Today, we have enough to get through our days in our in-progress Topanga house. With so little storage space available inside the house, many of our functional items are placed and scattered in temporary corner piles. They are somewhat organized piles coordinated in categories, but I still see them as "piles." This temporary situation is allowing me to see my beloved analogue artifacts separately from everything else I own. A few selected analogue pieces I still keep around, like my Traveler's Notebook even during this very transitional phase, might not weigh heavily nor take much of the space in the house. However, they hold an immense space for my inner life. It is just as much of a "home" for my soul as our house is for our physical bodies. It's a reminder that I can have a rich life without owning a lot physically.

I hope you enjoy this months' stories contributed by Trina, Anon Gray, and Frido. They share their unique relationship with their physical world in the context of analogue life—the meanings behind what they own and the role each artifact plays.

As we collectively reflect on the analogue system for the upcoming year, I hope we all find peace and groundedness in our "home," figuratively and metaphorically.
