Ngā Hau Māngere – Old Māngere Bridge replacement project

15 November 2022

Upcoming work: Permanent anti-slip deck surfacing

We mentioned in our August e news that we didn’t get the good weather we needed earlier in the year to apply the permanent anti-slip deck coating. A temporary anti-slip deck coating was applied so that we could open the bridge in late August, and we are coming back now that the weather is more favourable to apply the permanent anti-slip coating.

So that this work can be completed, we need to close the bridge temporarily from 10am, Monday 28 November to 7pm, Friday 9 December.

We’ll be working as quickly as we can and if we get the work done sooner, we will open the bridge before this date. During this time, you will be able to cross the Manukau Harbour via the SH20 underpass and security guards will be on duty.

The permanent coating of the deck will also include a colour change – while the purple areas located around the benches remains the same, the black will be replaced with grey to provide a softer colour palette to the deck.

Update: Waterfront Road Reserve

A part of Waterfront Road Reserve became home for the Ngā Hau Māngere team while the bridge was being built. Once the offices and construction equipment were removed, the area received a sprinkling of new grass seed and native planting to transform it back into a community space. We kept this area roped off to ensure the grass seed was protected but as the above photo shows, it was as if the site office had never been there! Before the end of the year, the fencing will be taken down for locals and visitors to enjoy again.
