The winner of the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Non-Fiction, Gunaydin delves into the relationship between identity, culture, and language in the context of migration and belonging. Gunaydin’s essays ask: what are the legacies of migration, apart from loss? And how do we find comfort in where we are?

Book: The Combat doctor by Dr Dan Pronk

Anzac Day

Second Lieutenant Henry Miller Lanser was born in Paddington in 1890. Known as 'Miller', he attended Waverley and Fort Street Public Schools and went on to become a motor mechanic. After enlisting, he was posted to Egypt in December 1914. While in Egypt in 1914 Lanser recorded a greeting (known as the Lanser disc) to his family at a small record manufacturing company which is the only known audio recording of an Australian soldier on his way to fight in the First World War. Lanser saw action and injuries in Gallipoli, Lone Pine, and the Somme. On 5 November 1916, he was killed in action near Flers.

Waverley Youth Art Prize

Applications open now. Closes 25 May 2023

Dreams of the future and sparks of inspiration, how will we overcome challenges, make a better world and find our very own Climate Utopia? The Waverley Youth Art Prize is back for 2023 and we are calling on all young artists aged 9-18 to get involved. This year’s theme, Climate Utopia, was decided by a young people’s focus group and is intended to get young artists thinking about hope, possible futures and the environment.
