Work to start on major sites

We’ve now completed designs for retaining walls at the five significantly damaged sites on Takaka Hill and construction will get underway mid-March. We expect to be able to complete most of the work and reopen the road to two lanes by the end of the year. The road will be sealed, and new signage installed early in 2021.This work will be carried out by Downer on behalf of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Thank you for your continued patience while we work to get your road back up and running.

Changes to traffic lights from early next week

To progress the repairs as quickly as possible, work will be carried out on all five sites in parallel. To access the slip at the top of the hill, the road must be reduced to one lane and the traffic lights shifted to include this area.

This will add two minutes to wait times at the lights, increasing the total wait time to 14 minutes at each end of the lights.

We plan to start moving the lights on Monday or Tuesday next week, weather permitting. The process will take about two weeks to complete so during this time manual stop/go will be in place.

Cycling on the hill

For safety reasons, cyclists are asked to avoid traveling over the hill while construction is underway between mid-March and October 2020. During this time there’ll be a heavy construction plant operating nearby and the road width will be significantly reduced.

Night road closures

Before physical works get underway, the barriers around the major sites need to be replaced.  We will need to close the road for about 10 nights to do this work. However, the road will be opened for a short period each night for essential travel over the hill.

We are still confirming the times and dates of the night closures and will provide confirmation when we know.

Please be assured that emergency services will be able to use the road at all times.
