Kia ora and welcome

Welcome to the first edition of the Northland state highway maintenance roadworks update for the 2025/26 summer season. In this e-news, we’ll share updates on maintenance and renewal roadworks across the state highway network from Topuni all the way to Te Reinga Wairua (Cape Reinga).

With our summer maintenance programme set to begin in September, we’ll share weekly updates with you to let you know what work is happening on our state highways, where it’s happening and when, to help you plan your journey.

Over the coming months essential maintenance work including road rebuilding and resurfacing will be carried out across the country. To be effective and durable, this work must be done during the warmer, drier months. It can't be done during winter when the weather is wet and cold.

While the season hasn’t officially begun, we’re already busy with preparation works. Below we share some of the works underway to help us prepare for the season.

We’ll share more details about the full 2025/26 programme in the coming weeks.

Please encourage family and friends to sign up to stay up to date with works happening on state highways in the region.

Whenever you come to a worksite, remember that our road workers are doing their best to complete their work and keep you moving. Please be respectful and follow their advice and instructions.

We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience while we carry out these improvements.

Preparing Northland’s roads for the next renewal season

In the lead up to the 2025/26 road renewal season, our maintenance crews are carrying out important preparation works across the region.

From 11 to 29 August (weather permitting), you’ll see five roadwork crews working day and night under short stop/go traffic management along SH12 (sections between Paparoa and the Brynderwyn Hills) and SH1 (sections north and south of Whangārei).

This is essential prep work ahead of a busy renewal season where we plan to rebuild, resurface and reseal a range of roads around the region, using chipseal or new asphalt at several sites. Before this larger resurfacing can begin, roadworkers often need to complete pre-seal repairs and patching. That’s why you might see or hear about work happening in the same spots twice – the first visit strengthens the road base and addresses defects, so the final resurfacing lasts longer and provides a smoother, safer drive.

Roadworkers will be digging out and rebuilding weak sections, strengthening road foundations with stabilising agents, and replacing worn asphalt. Doing this now protects the highways from further damage and means resurfacing projects starting in spring can be delivered more efficiently, giving communities safer, longer lasting roads.
