Construction progressing well

Work to make State Highway 1 through Dome Valley safer is progressing well despite challenges presented by the Omicron outbreak.

The Dome Valley project is part of the government's Road to Zero Programme underway to prevent people from dying or being seriously injured on high-risk state highways and local roads.

With more than 10,000 vehicles travelling the route on any given day, it’s critical that we make it safe as soon as possible and we are making good progress.

What work has been completed

Vector futureproofing has been completed between Frogs Pool Farm and Falls Bridge in Stage 3. This has seen the installation of three kilometres of ducting, underneath the new pavement.

In Stage 5, widening of the road northbound of L Philips Road to Waiwhiu Road is now complete.

The Sheepworld culvert has been extended to widen the highway and protect the environment into the future.

What we’re working on

Stage 3: We are now widening the southbound shoulder and there is two hundred metres of kerb and pipes still to be installed between Waitaraire Stream and Falls Bridge. Once these construction activities have been completed, chipseal surfacing and line-marking can be carried out. Stage 3 will be complete once wire safety barriers have been installed.

Stage 5: A soil nail wall - a retaining wall reinforced by grouted, tension resisting steel nails - is due to be completed this month. This is located approximately 250 metres south of the Dome Valley Lookout. Soil nail walls are used to stabilize natural soil slopes, which is important for a route like Dome Valley which is surrounded by high hilltops.
