Ōtaki to north of Levin project update – December 2019
We’re working to make travel from Ōtaki to north of Levin safer and more resilient as well as planning to increase transport choices for the area’s growing population.
In October we committed to the critical next steps on the new Ōtaki to north of Levin highway. In addition we advised we’d be progressing state highway road safety improvements in the short to medium term in the area and a review of speed limits on SH1 from Ōtaki to Levin, to ensure they’re safe and appropriate.
We’re keen to let you know what we’ve been working on over the last few weeks, what we’ll be doing next, and when you can expect to hear from us.
Progress update
Work is progressing now on plans to improve safety on the existing state highways in the corridor, as well as progressing plans for the new highway. This is happening through several, interconnected projects, and we have been working to establish an over-arching programme structure to manage and coordinate all of these activities, including our communications with you.
To get this underway we have been increasing resources on the team and working to engage suppliers. Timelines for the projects are currently being developed, and we’ll share these with you in the new year. These will include key milestones that we’ll report back to you on as we progress.
As work progresses, we look forward to sharing proposals and designs with you and others in the community. This will include inviting your input on safe and appropriate speeds and other potential safety improvements on the existing roads and roadsides. Based on work carried out to date, we are developing a plan for staging the possible safety improvements. Before finalising this plan, we’ll be letting you know about options, and seeking feedback.
Later on next year, we’ll also seek your feedback on the developing designs for the new road corridor.

While preparatory work is progressing you’ll notice safety activities underway, as we refresh line markings and improve signage across the existing SH1 and SH57 corridor in this area.
We’ll provide another update in the new year, which will include details of what we’ll be sharing with you over the first half of 2020.
