SH22 Drury upgrade

Project update

7 October 2025

Project update | He pānui

Since our last update in August, we can now provide an update on how the SH22 Drury upgrade project will be delivered. We can confirm that the construction of the project will be staged.

During our work on the project's current pre-implementation phase, the project team identified the need to undertake an interim upgrade of the SH22/Jesmond Road intersection to provide access to the planned Ngākōroa station being built by KiwiRail. The station is expected to become operational in 2027 - which is before construction of the full SH22 Drury upgrade can be completed.

The project team therefore sought the early release of construction funding for an interim upgrade of the SH22/Jesmond Road intersection, and this was approved in late August.

With that confirmed, a design for the interim Jesmond intersection upgrade has been developed and the procurement process for appointing a construction contractor will get underway shortly.

Subject to consent approval and the successful procurement of a contractor, the interim upgrade of the SH22/Jesmond Road intersection will begin in late 2025 and take around 6 months to complete.

Construction of the wider project will begin somewhat later - after the additional land required for the project has been purchased and full funding for construction has been confirmed.  Construction on the remainder of the project is expected to get underway in early 2027 and take 2-3 years to complete.

Upcoming speed consultation | Kei te kimi whakaaro

The growth and development happening around the wider Drury area means that the role and function of various roads are changing and evolving. As urban development extends, SH22/Karaka Road will become increasingly more like Great South Road through Takanini and Papakura and less like a rural arterial road.

When upgrades are made to roads with a posted speed limit higher than 50 km/h, including when new traffic lights are installed, consideration must be given to what is the safe and appropriate speed limit for the stretch of road involved.

Our planned upgrade of SH22 includes the installation of traffic signals at the Jesmond Road intersection. These traffic lights will be needed to provide safe access for entering and exiting the new Ngākōroa train station via a new road to be built opposite Jesmond Road.

It is considered that a speed limit reduction from 80 km/h down to 60 km/h on SH22 somewhat west of the Jesmond Road intersection is appropriate to provide a safer speed environment for motorists approaching the traffic lights.

A proposed speed reduction is shown on our SH22 Drury upgrade design plans, which are available on the project website here

The proposal has been highlighted by the project team to visitors attending the Drury / South Auckland community information days held during this year, where the design plans have been on display.

Formal consultation on this proposed speed limit reduction, in accordance with the requirements of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024, will be held before the end of 2025.

In addition to other avenues, the start of consultation will also be notified in a coming issue of this e-newsletter, providing readers with the opportunity to give their feedback. If you wish to participate, please wait for notice about the formal consultation period beginning and do not reply to this e-newsletter.

If approved, the current 60 km/h zone on SH22 (that begins at the Hingaia stream bridge by Drury Tires and ends between the Burberry Road and McPherson Road intersections) would be extended to a point further west out beyond the Jesmond Road intersection.  The change would be implemented as part of the interim upgrade of the SH22/Jesmond Road intersection (see first item above) when the traffic lights are installed.
