Night Work - low noise asphalting to start on CNC

We will start applying the low noise asphalt on the CNC, from QEII Drive to the Styx River Bridge on Sunday night 13 February, weather permitting. This area already has its final layer of chip seal so the low noise asphalt can be laid right away. This work will be done nightly and will take about a week in each direction. We will close, first the southbound lanes overnight from 8pm to 6am, and then the northbound lanes.

The diversion for the CNC closures is via Main North Road. Detour signage will be in place.

Asphalting is weather and temperature dependent so these dates may change with rain or low/very high temperatures. However, if this work goes to plan, the weather stays favourable and supplies are available, we may be able to do other sealing work at the southern end of CNC and QEII Drive over this time.

Around the end of February, we will start asphalting CNC from the Styx River Bridge to SH1. Following this, we will asphalt SH1 between the CNC/SH74 and the Waimakariri Bridge. This work should be finished by April 2022. We will then come back and asphalt QEII Drive west and the CNC from QEII Drive to Cranford Street and Cranford Street if the conditions are good.

Detours and Closures

When we are sealing on the CNC, we will close either the southbound or northbound lanes from 8pm to 6am each night from Sunday night 13 February to around the end of March. Detour signage via Main North Road will be in place. The CNC will be reopened during the day with the new low noise asphalt applied.

Night work and noise

This work is being done at night to avoid creating significant congestion. While this is better for traffic flows, it will be noisy for those living nearby. We apologise for disturbing you. However, this work should move quite quickly along the CNC and the machines will not be in one location for long.

Our plan is to work five nights a week with a break on Friday and Saturday nights.

Project timing

Sealing work is very weather dependent; we need the weather to be dry, both before and during the work, and the ground temperatures need to be more than 10 degrees. If the weather or other unforeseen events let us down, we will review our work programme as soon as we can and update our website. www.nzta.govt.nz/cnc
