Te Ara Tūtohu: Waitara to Bell Block

8 August 2023

Kia ora,

The pedestrian and cyclist underpass at Princess Street gets one step closer to being a reality this week, with the concrete box culverts that form part of the underpass being delivered and installed this Thursday and Friday.

These culverts will form the walls of the underpass and feature a cultural expression which Manukorihi, Ngāti Rahiri, Otaraua, Pukerangiora and Puketapu hapū (ngā hapū) have worked with Tihei Design and Workshop Studio to develop. This work is the first part of a wider cultural narrative being developed for the road between Waitara and Bell Block.

On Thursday and Friday, you will see the concrete culvert pieces being lifted into place by crane. Traffic will be stopped for up-to two minutes at a time when the pieces are installed. This work will be carried out in off-peak times and will not have a significant impact on traffic flows.

Once complete, the underpass will provide safer access across the highway for pedestrians and cyclists.
