Protect appeared on BBC Breakfast earlier this month commenting on whistleblowing detriments in the NHS. Discouraging employees from reporting concerns has serious implications for patient care and safety.  It is alarming that Sir Robert Francis isn’t confident that another Mid Staffs can be averted NHS whistleblowers need more protection, expert warns - BBC News.

Also concerning is the number of McDonald’s employees who feel unable to blow the whistle safely. More than 100 members of staff have accused the company of mishandling sexual abuse, racism and bullying allegations. A young workforce have not trusted managers to deal effectively with their concerns, deciding to raise issues with journalists instead.

The Environment Agency has published a survey which suggests almost a fifth (18%) of all waste is illegally managed – these “toxic crimes” damage the environment and the public. Whistleblowers can hold organisations accountable to their environmental responsibilities, and we continue to urge employers to adopt effective whistleblowing arrangements as part of any ESG strategy.

Online registration is now open for October's Conference on the Future of Whistleblowing.  Our stellar panelists discussing “Who does it best? Views from abroad and lessons for the UK” have been confirmed. Anna Myers, Director of WIN, will chair a discussion with Robert Spano, Former Head of ECHR, Tom Devine, Legal Director of the Government Accountability Project, Pusetso Morepedi, Southern Africa Director of Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa, and Kieran Pender, Senior lawyer at Human Rights Law Centre Australia. Please register here, and find the full agenda on our website.

We have published two new blogs from our Legal Advisors as part of our Anniversary series. Rebecca has written about the relationship Gen Z has with whistleblowing and Imogen, has taken a deep dive into the world of social media and wider disclosures: Are you sure you want to post this? Whistleblowing online.

Finally thank you to all who attended Protect’s Alumni Party – it was lovely to gather so many former and present staff, trustees, Council members and volunteers to celebrate our 30th birthday.
