Stage 1 update

Enabling works at Berry Bridge have now been completed. The team finished the first part of works in preparation of the bridge widening which will include relocation of the gas main.

In September we received our resource consents for Stage 1. The independent commissioners have also released their recommendations for our Notice of Requirement. The Notice of Requirement hearing was one of the first virtual hearings that Auckland Council has held.

Read the recommendation by Council's independent commissioners here

Next steps

Tendering for the construction contract on Stage 1 is now underway. We expect to award a contract from late-2020 and will start construction from early-2021.

Construction will begin on the northern side of the highway. We will know more about the construction timeline once we have a construction partner on board.

You will receive updates via this newsletter and we will hold an open day for the community to meet the team and learn more about the construction phase in early-2021.

Stage 2 update

We are pleased to announce that additional funding has been approved to progress design and construction of Stage two.

As work on the design for Stage 2 has progressed, there have been significantly more design challenges, and therefore higher costs than anticipated when the project was scoped in 2016. It has taken longer than expected to secure funding for the next phase of the project and we appreciate your patience.

Covid-19 has impacted Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency's revenue. This has led to hard decisions being made on what capital projects can be progressed in a fiscally constrained environment.

Safety, increasing travel options and the clear impact from congestion has meant this project remains a priority for delivery.

Next steps

With funding approved we will continue to progress design.

We will start by undertaking topographical surveys in the road corridor. These surveys will help to inform the planning and design, and will start from the week beginning Monday 5 October.

Northwest bus improvements - feedback open

Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are asking for feedback on a proposal to significantly improve public transport connections to and from Auckland's northwest.

The proposed improvements include -

  • Upgrading and extending the existing bus shoulder lanes along the Northwestern Motorway (SH16)
  • A station at Westgate, and interim bus stops at Lincoln Road and Te Atatū motorway interchanges
  • Improvements to increase bus priority at motorway interchanges
  • A review of the bus network.

The improvements are to be built over the next five years and, once complete, will encourage more people to use public transport while plans are made for longer-term improvements.

Feedback is open until Sunday 25 October. To provide feedback, go to AT.govt.nz/haveyoursay
