Creating a smoke-free WAHealth Minister Roger Cook has announced Healthway's grant to the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) of $962,500 to deliver a range of public health activities to create a smoke-free Western Australia. Over the next three years, the funding will allow ACOSH to focus its work on minimising the adverse impacts of e-cigarettes, reducing the number of tobacco retailers in WA, and expanding smoke-free places. Image: Auto One Targa Albany Sprint Image provided by Central Wheatbelt Hockey Association Healthy Halftimes successCongratulations to the 12 hockey clubs from across the State for taking part in Hockey WA's Healthy Halftimes program this year. The program, supported by Healthway, encourages healthy eating and drinking during and after junior sport and helped reduce unhealthy options offered at club canteens. Find out more. Gymnastics takes offSince launching in May 2021, Gymnastics WA’s Gym Warriors and UWA’s KIDDO program have made a phenomenal start in expanding gymnastic programs in early childhood years. This partnership, funded by Healthway, is upskilling gymnastic coaches and delivering the Gym Warriors program in partnership with Early Childhood and Education Care Centres. Read more. Image provided by Gymnastics WA Congratulations Coogee Live The City of Cockburn's Coogee Live 2021 has won the Australian Event Awards' best Community Event in Australia. Coogee Live was praised for its inclusiveness, cultural diversity, and sustainability initiatives. Through our partnership with the City, we increased healthy food and drink options at the event, and promoted physical activity and healthy eating. Watch the video to find out how. Developing safer communities Funded by Healthway, the WA Centre for Rural Health developed an online bystander training course to prevent family violence. The training “Speaking Out Against Disrespect” aims to build individuals’ skills and confidence to speak up about sexist and disrespectful behaviour in their workplace and community. Find out more. An aminated video demonstrating the impact of trauma on a child’s developing brain has also been produced. Image: Go for 2&5 Family Fun Day Jam-packed family fun day A highlight of Children's Week was Meerilinga's Go for 2&5 Family Fun Day at Whiteman Park. Healthway, through Go for 2&5, worked with Meerilinga to develop activities that promoted healthy eating and nutrition to children, young people, and their parents. More than 5,000 people came out on a hot day to enjoy the activities. Check out the video for a sense of the day. Unhealthy promotion in sport The Cancer Council WA recently examined the Instagram pages of elite WA sports teams to measure the prevalence of junk food, alcohol, and gambling promotion. Find out more. The Cancer Council WA will be hosting an online event focusing on junk food in sport and Healthway's Senior Manager Health Promotion Partnerships Sue-Ellen Morphett will be presenting.
