Pop‑up schools to support the Katherine community opening tomorrow

The Northern Territory Government is supporting the Katherine community to bounce back after the recent flooding event by establishing three temporary pop‑up schools, which will open tomorrow, Wednesday 11 March 2026.

These pop‑up schools will provide safe supervision and an activity‑based program for students from across Katherine. Teachers from local schools will staff the programs, although students may not be placed with their usual teacher or classmates. Arrangements for these pop-up schools are as follows:

North Side Pop‑Up located at Clyde Fenton Primary School

Supporting students from Clyde Fenton Primary School
Supporting Katherine High School students in Years 7–9

South Side Pop‑Up located at Katherine South Primary School

Supporting students from Katherine South, Casuarina Street and MacFarlane Primary Schools
Children currently in evacuation centres who are not enrolled in a Katherine school may also attend

Years 10–12 Pop‑Up located at Katherine School of the Air

Supporting Katherine High School students in Years 10–12

Pop‑up schools will operate from 8:15 am to 2:45 pm. Families are responsible for transporting their children to the pop-up schools, as school bus services are not operating, and students must bring their own lunch. Students currently in evacuation centres will have transport and lunch provided, with buses departing at 8:00 am from the evacuation centres.

These arrangements will remain in place until Friday 13 March 2026, when updated information for the following week will be provided.

Katherine School of the Air is reopening tomorrow for their enrolled students and will also support the Katherine High School Year 10-12 students.

Kintore Street School and Katherine Flexible Learning and Engagement Centre (KFLEC) remain unable to open at this time. Preschool and Families as First Teachers (FAFT) programs will also remain closed.

Jilkminggan School, Mataranka School, Nganmarriyanga School, Woolianna School and Wugularr School remain closed. Students from Nganmarriyanga and Woolianna Schools are attending pop-up schools in Darwin and Palmerston.

Families should directly contact early childhood education and care services and St Joseph’s Catholic College Katherine to receive updates on operating status.

The Northern Territory Government thanks families, school staff and the wider community for their cooperation and resilience as recovery efforts continue. These pop‑up schools will help ensure continuity of learning and provide stability for children during this challenging time.
