CHAMBER UPDATES
Time Flies When You're Having Fun: Supporting Our Hutt Valley Rangatahi Into Employment![]()
For just over two years the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce has been supporting our region's employers to connect to our local secondary schools as part of work to support rangatahi to discover, explore, connect to, and experience the world of work. Employers have been able to support schools and rangatahi in their community whilst discovering what amazing future staff the rangatahi can be. We have helped lots of employers to find some future talent. Last week, our Education to Employment Consultant, Amanda Walters, was delighted to catch up with one of the first rangatahi that she placed into employment. George, a year 13 student at the time, had tentative plans to become a PE teacher. He was motivated by a conversation with Excel Refrigeration, to find out more about the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Amanda worked with George, providing interview preparation, helping him research the industry, and introducing him to a local employer who had an apprenticeship opportunity. Fast forward two years, and George is having great success in this industry, working throughout the region with Wasabi Air and currently completing the second year of his apprenticeship. He loves his work and is looking forward to qualifying in the future. Amanda commented that “Having the opportunity to see how successful rangatahi have become in their employment journey is one of the best parts of my role and another reason why I love my job! To see how much they have grown in confidence and how proud they are of the new skills that they have learnt is incredibly rewarding”.
