Block Homes for the people of Lombok

Last month, we told you about Pak Jumangse and the new Block Home we built for him and his family. A second family also received a new Block Home last month.

Here's their story. 

This is Pak Siah and his family in front of their new Block Home. It was the second Block Home built by Classroom of Hope Indonesia last month (and our 4th overall)!

Pak Siah, his wife, and two adult children live in the village of Kopang, in Lombok, Indonesia. Making a living as farmers the family's income is low, and their home was already in a state of disrepair when the 2018 Lombok earthquakes hit and caused significant further damage. They have lived in their dilapidated house for four years since the earthquakes.

With the help of Classroom of Hope donors and Block Solutions technology, our local NGO partner was able to build a new Block Home from recycled plastic waste for Pak Siah and his family - in just 4 DAYS!!

Built on a strong new foundation, the upgraded structure is 36m2, containing three bedrooms and a sitting room, complete with wooden doors and window frames and galvanized metal roofing! Pak Siah and his family will use an existing structure for their kitchen and bathroom.

We are thrilled to provide Pak Siah and his family with this new environmentally sustainable home, giving them a safe and comfortable living space to grow and thrive in for generations to come. And by using recycled plastic blocks from Block Solutions, this house removed more than a tonne of plastic waste from the environment!

ABOUT THE BLOCK SOLUTIONS FACTORY IN LOMBOK

Until now, the Block Schools and Block Homes built in Lombok, Indonesia, have been constructed using Blocks imported from Block Solutions in Finland. We first needed to prove that building schools and homes with this technology were a viable way to rebuild Lombok. Now that we know we can build safe, durable, long-lasting schools and homes in Lombok using Block Technology, Asia’s first Block Solutions factory is currently being built on the island. When this factory is complete, we will produce Blocks locally using Indonesia’s recycled plastic waste. 

The government of Indonesia (NTB) provided the 2000m2 of land where building contractors are building the factory. When the factory first opens, it will have one injection molding machine that will receive an input of 1300 tonnes of recycled plastic waste per year in the form of pellets. This injection molding machine, at full utilisation, can produce enough Blocks to build 600 classrooms per year.
