Reel-y good news for keen fishers

The Manukau Harbour has long been an important source of kai and the old bridge became a popular fishing spot across many generations. When speaking with the community about what they would like to see in the new bridge, we heard many stories about fishing…

“It would be great to catch a fish and then BBQ as a family”
“The pleasure of the view and seeing the dads with their children fishing”
“Fisher people need space to cast behind them”
“The area can be used by cyclists, runners, boats, fishermen at the same time - it is a place our community uses often”
(submissions from the 2012 and 2014 community engagement reports)

A transport system which reflects the people who will use it helps us to create the type of welcoming neighbourhoods that people like to live in, and this means that the benefits for the community are often more than just helping people get around.

Knowing how important fishing is to people from the area, the new bridge will have two dedicated fishing bays so that you and your whānau or friends will be able to enjoy an afternoon catching kai.  The bays will be positioned over the deepest part of the harbour to help increase the chances of catching a snapper (or two!) as well as be an additional four metres wide to separate the fishing space from people who are using the bridge as a transport connection.

Helping to make those hours waiting for a nibble on your bait a little easier, rod holders will be positioned along the length of the fishing bays so you can save your energy for when you need to reel in your catch.
