Our team returned to Lombok to reconnect with schools we've supported—and visit those still in need.

There’s something special about getting out into the field, meeting the communities we work with face to face, hearing their stories firsthand, and seeing the impact (and the need) with our own eyes.

Last week, Rachael (Programs Manager), Tanya (CEO) and Satria (Field Officer) travelled across Lombok to visit some schools that have already been supported by Classroom of Hope, and others that are still waiting for help. They journeyed through winding roads and lush landscapes to reconnect with communities we have served, hear firsthand how things have changed, and understand where support is still needed.

At schools that have already been supported, like Tanjung 3 Junior High School and Nurul Hidayah Primary School (our school from last year’s end-of-financial-year campaign) the team was met with joy and heartfelt welcomes. Students spoke proudly about their new classrooms: how they feel safer, can focus better, and are enjoying school more than ever before.

One school that stood out during the visit was SDN Lenek Duren 1, the future site of our EOFY 24/25 campaign project. The welcome from the school community was unforgettable. Girls in striking traditional outfits performed a cultural dance to greet the team, followed by a formal sit-down where durian and boiled sweet potatoes were served as a generous and meaningful gesture of hospitality. The school has a strong reputation in the region, having competed and won in various academic and cultural competitions, with notable achievements in dance and mathematics.

But behind the pride and passion lies a pressing need. Many of the classrooms at Lenek Duren are still makeshift or damaged, hot, noisy, and unsafe learning environments that simply don’t match the spirit of the students or the dedication of their teachers. This is a school with incredible potential, and with the right support, we can help create the kind of learning space these children truly deserve.

These visits are an essential part of our work. They help us stay grounded in the reality of what’s needed, remind us why we do what we do, and most importantly they deepen our connection with the communities we serve.

As we gear up for our 2024/25 End of Financial Year Campaign, we’re looking for passionate supporters who want to help transform SDN Lenek Duren 1 and the futures of the children who learn there. If you’re interested in making a pledge or learning more, we’d love to hear from you.
