Kia ora,

Works resume at the end of this week on the Bay View section of the SH2 Wairoa to Bay View safety improvement works, beginning with realignment of a cable and continued work on one of the retaining walls.

The safety improvements programme is nearing completion. Most of the work north of the SH5 turn off has finished, including the work before COVID-19 at Te-pa-o-Toi. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will return to this site at the end of May to install a side barrier, and sites between Tangoio and Wairoa will undergo a second coat seal in Spring. The works north of the SH5 turn off have included a mix of widening the road, installing side barriers and some resilience work, making this stretch of state highway considerably safer.

The last phase which has been underway since last year, is from Bay View to the SH5 turn off. We appreciate the patience of drivers through this busy section and we acknowledge it is taking longer to complete than expected. This section has a range of improvements happening, including the installation of several retaining walls, drainage upgrades, widening, side barriers and a wide centre line.

Project Manager, Kiran Hira says, “We are hopeful that the winter weather will allow us to continue, even though it’s at a slower pace due to the COVID-19 restrictions. We expect work will be complete in this section in the next three months but will keep you informed as we know more when work resumes next week.”
