A warm welcome to the Brescia community

On May 1, we were honoured to welcome 700 new students and 115 staff and faculty from Brescia into the Western community.

Marking Red Dress Day

The Western community is invited to mark Red Dress Day, a day to remember and honour missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people on Sunday, May 5.

Curriculum developed at Western expanding to Ontario students

Developed at Western, the Fourth R curriculum provides students with skills to build and maintain healthy relationships. Thanks to an investment from the Ministry of Education, it will be rolled out to 5,000 teachers across the province.

Biology master’s student Katarina Kukolj has been interested in protecting the environment since she was a child. During her time at Western she has launched a compost program, implemented face mask recycling during the pandemic and will now expand snack wrapper recycling across campus.

May 4 (11 a.m.)
Indigenous Students’ Association’s (ISA) Powwow

Everyone is welcome to the ISA’s 18th annual powwow featuring head dancers Shannon White and Frazer Sundown. Non-perishable food donations will be accepted. Mustang Lounge, UCC.

May 8 to 10 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Employee health fair and self-guided tour

Visit vendors during the employee health fair on May 8 in Alumni Hall. If you can’t attend, you can take a self-guided tour of the displays and learn ways to improve your overall wellness on the following days. Support Services Building, main lobby (4th floor).

May 11 (2 to 9:30 p.m.)
Science Rendezvous

At this all-ages, fun-filled, free event, you and your family can engage in S.T.E.A.M. activities led by a team of Western scientists including graduate research assistants, professors, undergraduate research assistants and staff. Alumni Stadium, no registration required. Free parking available at Huron Flats lot.

May 15 (9 to 11 a.m.)
Workshop: Science writing for The Conversation

Open to faculty members, post-docs and PhD candidates, this hands-on workshop led by editor-in-chief of The Conversation Canada Scott White and science editor Nehal El-Hadi, will show you how to write an effective science or research-based article for publication. Email jzadorsk@uwo.ca to reserve your spot.

Emergency weather siren testing
The live monthly testing of Western’s emergency weather siren will take place on May 8 at 10:30 a.m. Unless otherwise notified, this is only a test and no action is required.  

Western's new learning management system
Academic courses are now taught using Western’s new learning management system, OWL Brightspace. Instructors must request a migration option through the OWL migration request App.

Register for summer intramurals
A full range of sports are available at the super, competitive and recreational levels. Open to all Western students and campus recreation members. Join as a team or as a free agent. Register by May 7.

Allie Plue, an occupational therapy graduate student, collaborated with peers in her program to create a visual cookbook as part of a community engaged learning project at L’Arche London. She explains how the book makes cooking more accessible for individuals with disabilities.
