The BOSSI Secretariat has been busy processing more than 750 registration renewals for land and mining surveyors along with over 200 candidate renewals for the 2023/2024 financial year.

Board member nominations 

The Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI) is an independent statutory body constituted under the Surveying and Spatial Information Act 2002.  It is responsible for:

  • Providing registration of land and mining surveyors
  • Investigation of complaints and resulting disciplinary action
  • Developing standards in surveying and spatial information in NSW
  • Providing advice to government on surveying and spatial information

The Board consists of 10-12 board members as per the constitution detailed in Section 27 of the Surveying and Spatial Information Act 2002.

One of these positions is a registered surveyor from the Public Service. The current appointment of David Job (Director Cadastral Integrity, Office of the Registrar General) expires on 9 November 2023.

The Board is now seeking nominations from suitably qualified and experienced persons.

The role will involve attending six board meetings each year, four are held in Sydney with one being held at Kurri Kurri and another in a regional location. The successful incumbent will also be required to be involved in other Board activities including various committees, workshops, and assessments.

Role requirements include skills, experience and knowledge as outlined below:

  • NSW Registered Surveyor employed in the Public Service
  • Knowledge of legislation, standards and techniques of land surveying as they apply in NSW
  • Knowledge of registration process for surveyors including assessment of surveyors and requirements for annual renewal of registration
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, remain objective, and to understand and manage conflicts of interest
  • Board and executive management experience in an organisation of the same or larger size
  • Well-developed communication, liaison and negotiation skills

  • Cover letter detailing how your skills, experience and knowledge meet the requirements outlined above
  • Resume (including contact details)

In accordance with the NSW Government Boards and Committees Guidelines, public sector employees do not receive remuneration for attending board activities or commitments – please speak with your manager to ensure that your organisation will provide the required support (time and funding, including travel) to undertake these duties.

BOSSI examinations - land assessments  

 

Applications for Land Assessments open on Monday 14 August and close Thursday 7 September 2023. 

Assessments will be held the week of 9 October 2023.

 
 

Important information for candidates  

 

A person can apply to sit a Board examination if they;

Are a financial candidate, and

Have obtained at least 26 weeks of recognised practical experience together with the specific requirements of the examination(s) they wish to undertake

Have nominated a mentoring surveyor.

 

If a candidate’s application to sit a Board examination is approved, the Registrar will provide the candidate written notification (via email) of the date, time and location of the Board examinations.

 

Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) 

Registered Land Surveyors who wish to work in NSW are required to complete an online notification process to become eligible under AMR. Once a Registered Land Surveyor has completed the online process and is deemed eligible, they may begin working in NSW.

BOSSI has created a NSW AMR information pack which holds information for any licenced surveyor to work in NSW under AMR. More information is available on the BOSSI website.
