SeaFit brings dental health and wellbeing event to Bridlington and Hull this April

The Fishermen’s Mission and Seafarers Hospital Society’s award-winning SeaFit initiative is bringing a health and wellbeing event to Bridlington and Hull this month. On 23 April, the team will be visiting Bridlington Harbour, and on 24 April they are attending Hull Fishing Heritage Centre, Hessle Road.

The events will focus on delivering information and support on oral hygiene, with the Dentaid charity offering free check-ups and treatments in their mobile dental studio. The service is open to both active and retired fishermen, as well as their immediate families, and will run from 10am to 4pm on both days.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s YourHealth coaches for fishermen will be attending in their mobile unit and can support patients from the local fishing community in addressing any health and wellbeing concerns.

Study To Make Hull The Best Place In The World For Loneliness Research And Interventions

Our Research Team at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are working in collaboration with Imperial College London and Hull City Council to lead the way in the fight to tackle loneliness and isolation. We are conducting research in Hull to highlight how loneliness can be affected by where you live and providing insight into our local area.

The INTERACT study aims to ‘measure’ loneliness in Hull and surrounding areas by inviting members of the community to complete a brief anonymised online survey which only takes a few minutes and is easy to complete. Anyone who is 16 years or older living within a ‘HU’ postcode area can take part in this survey (which can be accessed using a smartphone, tablet or personal computer). Learn more about the study.

Addressing the Rise in Teenage Vaping in Hull and East Riding Amidst Upcoming Disposable Vape Ban

Recent intelligence from our Trust's 0-19 Service reports a concerning increase in vaping among young people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. This trend is particularly notable with the shift from disposable to reusable vaping devices, coinciding with the impending UK-wide ban on disposable vapes set to take effect on June 1, 2025.

Key Findings

  • The proportion of 11 to 17-year-olds using disposable vapes has surged from 7.7% in 2021 to 69% in 2023.
  • Reusable vapes, characterised by refillable e-liquid chambers and rechargeable batteries, are becoming more prevalent among young people.
  • Despite regulations prohibiting the sale of vapes to individuals under 18, enforcement challenges persist, with reports of underage sales in the region.
Is vaping REALLY better than smoking?

Health Implications

While vaping is often promoted as a smoking cessation tool for adults, health experts warn of potential risks for young people, including:

  • Nicotine addiction, leading to withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and concentration difficulties.
  • Respiratory issues and potential long-term impacts on brain development.

Environmental Concerns

The environmental impact of disposable vapes is significant, with approximately five million units discarded weekly in the UK. This waste contributes to pollution and challenges in recycling due to the presence of lithium batteries.

The increase in teenage vaping in Hull and East Riding is a multifaceted issue requiring coordinated efforts from government, healthcare providers, educators, parents, and the community. With the upcoming ban on disposable vapes, there is an opportunity to reinforce preventive measures and support services to protect the health and well-being of young people in the region.
