The Future Learning Lab has officially launched!

Last month, Carleton University and industry members joined us to celebrate the official launch of the Future Learning Lab.

The event opened with remarks by Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon to announce the launch and creation of a new Experiential Learning Hub thanks to $2M in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities and matching contributions from the university.

The President also announced that Carleton received the Future Skills XR Grant in partnership with EON Reality. With an in-kind value of $50 million over three years, the grant will provide institutional access to the EON-XR Platform, the XR self-directed learning program, licenses, and hardware.

We couldn't be more excited about the additions to the Lab!

Through its innovative use of XR technologies, the Future Learning Lab will provide students with in-demand skills while having a meaningful and transformational impact on the teaching and learning culture at the university.

About I-CUREUS and SaPP
Carleton provides experiential learning opportunities through I-CUREUS and SaPP that help students develop academic and transferable skills. Through I-CUREUS undergraduate students can conduct faculty-supervised research, while SaPP allows them to partner with an instructor on teaching innovation projects and course design.

Blog: Student Technology Assistants - A Story from TLS' Past

As indicated in the November 2022 TLS newsletter, TLS is celebrating its 30th anniversary. To help recognize this milestone, we thought we'd share stories of teaching and learning from our past.

This is our third story in the series. Catch up on the previous story, Student Technology Assistants, here.

A Lesson Learned

Workshops have always been one of the ways that TLS has helped support the teaching and learning community's development. It's a service offering that continues with a substantial set of sessions across various topic areas.

In the early days of the Educational Development Centre (a precursor to Teaching and Learning Services), workshops included pedagogical and technological topics. These included assessment, fostering discussion, Photoshop, and PowerPoint for Teaching.

New Contract Instructor Orientation Spring 2023

If you’re a contract instructor who will be teaching an online, blended, in-person, or hyflex course this term, we are here to help you! Whether you’re getting ready to teach your first course at Carleton, or you’re returning after a break, you undoubtedly have questions about policies and procedures, teaching tips, and educational technology, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic and the university’s move to online teaching.

Our new orientation will have two parts:

  • Part one (now viewable) includes a series of screen capture recordings and supporting materials that you are asked to consult, at your convenience, before the live synchronous session.
  • Part two on April 19th will be a Q&A with representatives from TLS and other departments to answer your questions concerning online resources and other topics participants wish to discuss.

Space in all live Q&A sessions over Zoom is limited, so please register in advance.

Submit Your Textbook Adoptions to the Carleton Bookstore

The new term is fast approaching, which means it’s the perfect time to submit your textbook adoptions to the Carleton Bookstore! The earlier you submit, the more likely it is the Bookstore has the textbooks your students need in stock in time for the new term.

There are five ways to submit your textbook adoptions: through Discover, the online form, by email, by phone or in person at the Bookstore (173 University Centre). Learn more about how to submit your textbook adoptions here.

If your course doesn't require any course materials, or the materials are available elsewhere, contact the Bookstore so that they can pass this information on to any students that may come looking for help.

If you have any questions about textbooks, please contact the Bookstore at (613) 520-2600 x8115 or email textbooks@carleton.ca.

Don't Forget!

  • Nominate a Teaching Assistant for a 2022-23 Outstanding TA Award: If you’ve worked with a great teaching assistant (TA) this term, consider acknowledging their hard work by nominating them for an Outstanding TA Award. If you have any questions, please email TASupport@cunet.carleton.ca.
