Intersection safety improvements starting soon at Mangorei Road and Junction Street
Works are about to begin on safety improvements at the SH3 intersections of Mangorei Road and Junction Street.
These works are part of the wider New Plymouth to Hāwera Safety Improvements Project, which has delivered almost 7.5km of flexible median barriers and wide centrelines to date.
At the Mangorei Road intersection, the team will begin construction of a 28m by 24m roundabout, along with removal of the northbound passing lane at this location.
These works are due to start on Monday 4 November and will take place mostly during the daytime, with a contraflow system in place allowing continuous flow of traffic in both directions under a reduced speed limit.
The Mangorei Road works - which also include widening of the centreline either side of the intersection over about 1.2km in total - are expected to take 15 to 18 months to complete.
At the Junction Street intersection, Downer crews will begin asphalt resurfacing works from 7pm on Monday 28 October.
These will be night works, taking place from 7pm to 6am each evening, with the exception of Saturday night. These works are due to finish on the morning of Tuesday 5 November.
Stop/go traffic controls will operate, with delays of up to 5 minutes, and access to and from Junction Street will be closed while works are taking place (i.e., from 7pm to 6am each night except Saturday).
The Junction Street works also include widening of the centreline either side of the intersection over about 1km in total, and removal of the southbound passing lane at this location, which is much shorter than the recommended minimum length for safe overtaking.
