Hanga-Aro-Rau Pūrongo Ā-Tau Annual Report 2023-2024
Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council for Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics have released the 2023-2024 Hanga-Aro-Rau Pūrongo Ā-Tau Annual Report, showcasing their actions to enhance vocational education across the manufacturing, engineering, and logistics sectors. Over the past year, they have actively led and coordinated national and regional initiatives to identify workforce needs, support the vocational education system, and assisted employers in addressing those needs through research, advocacy, and the development of workforce plans.
These sectors continue to grapple with significant skills shortages, a challenge that is only projected to intensify in the coming years. All of their initiatives seek to contribute to addressing this challenge to strengthen productivity and economic prosperity for all.
Parliament Street Greenway Project Set to Begin in November
From 18 November, work will start on turning a short section of Parliament Street into a neighbourhood greenway (shared vehicle and cycling) space.
Improvements will be confined to the northern section of Parliament Street (closest to the Normandale Road Bridge).
This area is predominantly used by private vehicles to access properties and cyclists to connect between Pito-One to Melling cycleway. It will eventually link in with the shared pathways to be built as part of the Melling Transport Improvements.
Work involves improving the road layout and markings, installing new fencing along the rail corridor, and removing several on-street car parks.
Te Awa Kairangi anticipates this work to be completed in January.

Seaview Rd - Upcoming Road Resurfacing
Hutt City is notifying businesses along Seaview Rd, Gracefield Rd, and Port Rd of upcoming road resurfacing on Seaview Rd.
- Main Work Period: Primarily night shifts.
- Day Shift Detour: The green section will be worked on during the day, with Hutt-bound traffic detoured via Port Rd/Barnes. Eastbourne-bound traffic will not be affected.
Schedule:
- Stage 1 (Day Shift): Subsoil installation from Wednesday, 13 November to Thursday, 27 November 2024 (dates may vary slightly).
- Stage 2 (Night Shift): Resurfacing from Sunday, 24 November to Thursday, 5 December 2024.
Do you supply to Government? Important news about payments!
Last week, the government announced some important changes about how quickly they pay suppliers. Starting in 2025, 135 government agencies must pay 90% of their undisputed invoices within ten working days. This will increase to 95% by 2026. Agencies that deal with more than 2,000 domestic invoices each year will need to use eInvoicing by January 2026 and pay all domestic eInvoices within five working days.
This change builds on the current requirement for about 30 central government agencies that already have to pay 95% of their invoices within ten working days.
What does this mean for me?
For small businesses, cash flow is crucial. If you get paid late, it can be hard to pay your own bills, including your suppliers and staff. These new rules should help improve cash flow by speeding up payments from more government agencies.
I subcontract to larger organisations—what about me?
If you subcontract to larger businesses, Rule 51 states that government agencies must encourage these businesses to pay their subcontractors on time. They should offer terms that are as good as or better than those from the government.
Larger businesses should not be getting their payment in a short period of time, and then holding on to your payment until the last possible moment. If you are a large business who does this - STOP IT! If you need a loan that badly, talk to your bank, don’t hold your supply chain to ransom!
