In this issue, you’ll find a wealth of information designed to keep you informed about our initiatives, innovations and services tailored to meet your needs. Thank you for being a valued part of our community. This edition brings significant news, including the Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) being endorsed as a Core State Digital Asset (SDA) in New South Wales which will seamlessly integrate standardised spatial information into NSW Government systems and applications. We're also pleased to introduce a new feature for the SDT Explorer now accessible across multiple platforms, making it easier than ever for you to engage with our tools. In addition to this, our Historical Imagery Viewer has expanded to include more imagery, providing you with richer insights into our state’s landscape over time. Following on from the updated Surveying & Spatial Information Regulation 2024 taking effect this month, Surveyor-General's Direction (SGD) No.7 has been updated and is now available on the DCS Spatial Services website. In response to your feedback, the Spatial Collaboration Portal is undergoing significant upgrades that will introduce new features designed to streamline your workflows and improve data management efficiency. Finally, we’re proud to showcase our Preservation of Survey Infrastructure (POSI) program, which has produced video to promote the preservation and protection of NSW survey infrastructure. ![]() Our spatial data endorsed as first Core State Digital Asset The Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) has officially been recognised as the first Core State Digital Asset (SDA) in NSW. The FSDF is a standardised system for organising, managing and sharing spatial data. It provides foundational datasets that are essential for understanding and contextualising information, enabling innovative digital services. So, what is a State Digital Asset? Simply put, SDAs are digital tools or data used by multiple NSW Government agencies, helping them deliver better, more integrated services to the community. All NSW Government agencies will now build their spatial datasets on a unified base. This will create a seamless connection across services, enhancing the way we address priorities like housing, education and transport. As an endorsed Core State Digital Asset, agencies must use the FSDF spatial datasets. Themes currently available include:
To access the FSDF, go through the NSW Spatial Digital Twin. This innovative feature enables users to retrieve detailed spatial information by interacting with datasets on a map. Whether you prefer to choose a point, polygon, rectangle, or circle, the Identify tool provides a more flexible, streamlined way of querying data by selecting specific areas and returning results from multiple layers at once. Once an area is selected, users can access detailed information such as Address, Lot, Suburb, Local Government Area (LGA) and imagery capture dates. The results are conveniently displayed in a table that can be undocked and exported to Excel, while the corresponding areas are highlighted on the map for easy reference. In addition to this powerful new tool, we’re pleased to share that the SDT Explorer Beta is now accessible across multiple platforms! You can find it on the Spatial Services website and the Spatial Collaboration Portal Map Viewers page, making it easier than ever to explore spatial data and unlock insights. ![]() Learn more about how to preserve and protect NSW’s survey marks The Preservation of Survey Infrastructure (POSI) team has produced a new awareness video aimed at enhancing collaboration with government and industry stakeholders to protect NSW's survey marks and infrastructure. The unauthorised destruction survey mark infrastructure is estimated to cost NSW millions annually, impacting landowners, developers and the broader community. ![]() Surveyor-General’s Direction No 7 now published on our website The Surveying & Spatial Information Regulation 2024 officially took effect on 1 March 2025. In line with this, the updated Surveyor-General's Direction (SGD) No.7 (and soon No.6) are now available on the DCS Spatial Services website. SGD7 has been updated by our Survey Operations team, who addressed the feedback we received from relevant industry bodies and government agencies All Surveyor-General's Directions will be updated in line with the new Regulation over the coming months. ![]() Spatial Collaboration Portal upgrade will improve user experience The Spatial Collaboration Portal (SCP) is undergoing significant upgrades to enhance your user experience. This upgrade will transition our platform from Esri Enterprise 10.8.1 to Esri Enterprise 11.3, bringing a host of new features and improvements designed to streamline your workflows and enhance data management. Beginning in March, the upgrade process will be staged, starting with an initial upgrade to Esri Enterprise 10.9.1. This upgrade is important as it sets the foundation for our subsequent transition to Esri Enterprise 11.3. As we move forward, there will be architecture and application changes that may impact existing content in the SCP. To ensure a smooth transition, we have proactively audited and refreshed all portal content to comply with the new publishing guidelines. We’re migrating curated content to the new operating system, ensuring that it meets the updated requirements. For any questions contact us via the DCS Spatial Services Customer Hub. Benefits of the upgrade include:
![]() New imagery unlocked in the Historical Imagery Viewer The Historical Imagery Viewer is being expanded to include access to our Miscellaneous Historical Aerial Film Archive. This collection contains high-resolution aerial imagery with resolutions as fine as 10 cm and captures dates as far back as 1929, a major improvement over the standard historical coverage, which typically offers 50 cm resolution outside the Greater Sydney Area. This expansion marks a significant step in unlocking historical aerial imagery for a wide range of users, from government agencies to researchers and the general public. Aerial imagery is a valuable resource for studying, monitoring, and managing both natural environments and human activities. Historical aerial photographs provide unique insights into land-use changes over time, making them essential tools for researchers, planners, and historians. With the addition of 2,600 new projects and over 250,000 frames, users will gain unprecedented access to detailed historical aerial imagery. The Miscellaneous collection will be available to access in the coming weeks. Access the Historical Imagery Viewer via Spatial Collaboration Portal by clicking the button on the right. As the index is updated, access to search, view, and download individual Historical Aerial Photographs will progressively expand. In parallel, our Digital Services team has commenced the creation of ortho mosaic layers for the Town Imagery component of the Miscellaneous Collection. These will be released incrementally, providing seamless, high-resolution historical imagery over all of NSW to enhance research and analysis. ![]() Update on the ReSSE Scheme Recently the Remote Sensing Services and Equipment (ReSSE) Prequalification Scheme underwent a comprehensive review to cover all classes of imagery platforms and sensors. We hope our customers are enjoying the recent improvements to the ReSSE Scheme! Have an upcoming project before June 2025? We advise initiating any projects intended for the 2024/25 financial year before the end of March to increase the likelihood of successful completion by the end of June. We will continue to take on projects as requested. However, based on previous experience, large or complex projects initiated this late are unlikely to be completed within the financial year. Due to this, please ensure you consult with your finance/procurement teams to determine an appropriate solution if allocated budgets are required to be committed before the end of the financial year. ![]() Image: Cobar NSW, part of the Western Plains Bushfire capture procured through the ReSSE scheme.
