Your update from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

Welcome to the December project update for the three Waka Kotahi intersection improvement projects in Northland being delivered as part of the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme. This newsletter provides regular news and information about the projects.

These projects address key challenges for our regional state highway network, including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability. The projects also support regional economic development.

Roundabout operating at Puketona Junction

The roundabout will be operating at the intersection of SH10 and SH11 from this week. The team has made a big push to link up the new roundabout structure with the bridge near Te Ahu Ahu Road. Final surfacing and other finishing work will be done in the new year.

We want to thank road users for their patience as we worked on the narrow link between the bridge and the roundabout.

We will have a lowered speed limit of 50km/h in place over the holidays, with temporary safety measures (such as road cones) to help keep traffic flowing safely.

The closure of SH1 in the Mangamuka Gorge continues to have an impact on SH10 traffic volumes but the newly operating roundabout will help reduce travel delays through the area.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

Kawakawa roundabout now operating

The Kawakawa intersection of SH1 and SH11 has been operating successfully as a roundabout for two weeks. We have now finished surfacing work so the new roundabout can remain operational during the Christmas and New Year break. Temporary safety measures (such as road cones) will aid in keeping traffic moving safely throughout the holidays.

The intersection continues its transformation. Wood panels on the new retaining wall are beginning to define the adjacent hillside. The new wall, associated earthworks and planting have increased the stability of the slope down to the state highway. Design work has been finalised on carved panels which will enhance the appearance and cultural status of the previously scrub-covered entrance to Kawakawa township.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

SH12 and Rawene Road will be seeing safety improvements before Christmas

Rawene intersection part of safe system approach

Plans for the intersection of SH12 and Rawene Road include improving the road shoulder and installing sections of safety barrier along the state highway.

This work is part of our safe system approach aimed at reducing the risk of death and serious injury at state highway intersections.

Construction for the project is currently scheduled for early 2021.
