During the spring semester, we welcomed two judges as distinguished judges in residence at Duke Law — Judge Diane Wood of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Senior Judge Gerald Tjoflat of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Both also recorded interviews for my podcast Judgment Calls, which will be available later this summer. We were also delighted to welcome Judge Wood as the newest member of the Bolch Judicial Institute's Advisory Board. In March, we hosted a ceremony honoring Chief Judge Emeritus J. Clifford Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, recipient of the 2022 Bolch Prize for the Rule of Law. If you haven't yet, I encourage you to watch the program on Duke's YouTube channel. It was inspiring to hear so many esteemed judges — including chief justices from Pakistan, Singapore, Uganda, and Malaysia — celebrate Judge Wallace’s tireless work over more than 50 years to improve the rule of law in our country and more than 70 others. You can also hear my Judgment Calls podcast with Judge Wallace here. In May, our first annual McGovern Symposium on Civil Litigation honored the pathbreaking work of the late Duke Law Professor Francis McGovern. Held in tandem with our Advanced Certificate in Mass Tort MDL, the symposium brought together the field’s leading judges, lawyers, and scholars to explore new challenges and opportunities in mass tort MDL. And, just a few weeks ago, the judges in Duke Law's Master of Judicial Studies class finished their second semester of courses at Duke and headed home to begin work on their thesis projects. We so enjoyed having them here on campus. Finally, we announced that U.S. District Court Judge Paul Grimm of the District of Maryland will succeed me as the next director of the Bolch Judicial Institute, starting in January 2023. I couldn’t be more pleased with his appointment. He has tremendous enthusiasm, expertise, and a creative vision for advancing the Institute’s mission to protect and strengthen the rule of law. I very much look forward to supporting him in the Institute’s next phase. Please read on for more about these and other activities. Thank you for your interest in and support for our work. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer. David F. Levi Recent News U.S. District Judge Paul Grimm named director of the Bolch Judicial InstituteU.S. District Judge Paul W.
