Controlled burn supports local bushland The Environment and Bushland teams, with support from contractors and the Country Fire Authority (CFA), recently carried out an ecological burn at our bushland reserve on Adeneys Road in Cannons Creek. The burn took place in a coastal, grassland area next to Rutherford Creek to remove thick layers of plant material, known as biomass. This helps improve weed control and encourages the
regrowth of native species. These types of burns also help reduce fuel loads, lowering the risk of bushfires in the area.
Glossy Grass Skink (Pseudemoia rawlinsoni) 📷 James CorneliousDuring the burn, staff also observed the Endangered Glossy Grass Skink (Pseudemoia rawlinsoni), which highlights the ecological significance of the site and the importance of careful planning during this type of work.
ALSO - Last month's "where in Casey?" image (below) was Essex Park Reserve. Since 2011, over 15,000 trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted, creating important habitat and refuge for local wildlife. Most of the revegetation work was completed as part of Casey's "Growing a Green Web" program with assistance from staff at Melbourne Water, South East Water, the City of Casey and members of the community.
Essex Park Drive Bushland Reserve is part of a larger vision – a 22km section of the Dandenong Creek corridor.

Flora and fauna spotlight - Sweet Bursaria (Bursaria spinosa) This is a fantastic must-have for the habitat garden. A medium-sized shrub, it provides food and shelter for pollinators and small birds. The white flowers are sweet-smelling and are followed by small brown seed pods.
