Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

This Weeks Summary

 
 

Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road to the Heads, and its side roads remains restricted to residents, emergency and essential services. Work continues at several sites along this stretch of road. 

Daytime closures continue on Kenepuru Road, 20km from the start of the road from Onahau Road.

On Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 of November the closures will be in place from 8am to 5pm, with no openings. 

Oustide of the above, the Kenepuru Road closures are planned on weekdays from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm, with a 3.30pm finish on Fridays

Moetapu Bay Road remains closed to all traffic from 9am to 3pm, with openings on the hour until Friday 13 December, for a road retreat at Elephant Point. 

Daytime construction closures on Tepuia Heights begin on Monday 25 November

Work continues on multiple construction sites in the French Pass after the team cleared slips that came down in the heavy rain late last week. 

The new Waihopai Valley bridge upstream of the current temporary bailey bridge is taking shape with work on the road approach underway. 

Please ensure you keep to the reduced temporary speed limits when travelling through worksites to ensure the safety of our crews and road users. We thank you for your patience.

Road closures

 
 

Kenepuru Road - Water Tank slip

Kenepuru Road from the Onahau Road intersection is closed to all traffic from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm Monday to Thursday. On Friday the closure will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

On Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 of November the closure will be in place from 8am to 5pm, with no opening. These full day closures are for the installation of a culvert that traverses the road. The road can not be opened except for emergency services. Please plan ahead for these full day closures. 

A 98m retaining wall is being constructed at the Water Tank slip site, along with drainage upgrades and road reinstatement. Outside of the closure days and times, works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management with up to 15 minute delays. If you have any concerns, please contact recovery@marlboroughroads.com.

Moetapu Bay Road 

Moetapu Bay Road, approximately 2km from the start of the road is closed to all traffic, on weekdays from 9am to 3pm with hourly openings.

These closures are planned to be in place until mid December. Outside of the closure dates and times outlined above, work will be carried out under stop/go traffic management. Please expect delays.

Port Underwood Road

Port Underwood Road, between the Port Underwood Lookout and Tumbledown Bay Road intersection, will be closed to all traffic tomorrow, Friday 22 November, 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4pm. 

These works are for the installation of a culvert, drainage improvements and pavement reinstatement.

Tepuia Heights - Queen Charlotte Drive

From Monday 25 November to Friday 13 December, daytime construction closures will be in place on Tepuia Heights on weekdays between 10am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 4pm. These closures are for the upgrade of culverts, other stormwater upgrades and road reinstatement works.

Work will be completed outside of these times under stop/go traffic management, please expect delays.

Tara Bay - Kenepuru

Tara Bay Road will be closed to all traffic from Monday 2 December. Daytime construction closures will be in place weekdays from 7.30am to 5.30pm to allow for drainage updates and road reinstatement works.

 

 

 

Kenepuru Road Restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road to the Heads, and its side roads, Moetapu Bay Road and Te Mahia Road continue to be restricted to residents, emergency and essential services.

These roads have severe storm damage and entry into this section of Kenepuru Road is at resident and emergency or essential service drivers' discretion.

Residents only are permitted to walk and cycle on roads which are restricted to residents.

The following vehicle restrictions remain on Kenepuru Road from Linkwater to the Heads:

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and the following side roads; Mahau Road, Torea Road and Moetapu Bay Road as far as Double Bay Reserve.

This allows residents access to boat launching areas at Double Bay Reserve, Torea and Portage.

On all other side roads, between Kenepuru Road to the Heads no vehicles over 8m in length or 3.5 tonne in weight are permitted.

The following restrictions also apply on Kenepuru Road and it's side roads including Moetapu Bay Road;

  • No campervans, vans or buses.
  • Only 4WD and light vehicles.

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road;

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Extreme care should be exercised and daylight driving only is strongly recommended.

Resident Definition:

The definition of a resident, in terms of who is able to access roads restricted to resident and emergency services is;

A permanent resident, owner of a holiday home/bach, or the owner of a commercial interest.

It does not include visitors who are hiring or renting a holiday home or bach, where rental arrangements have been made through either a property letting agency or directly with the owner.

Other Recovery Roads

Please be aware that on all roads, including those with public access, there may be areas of works and traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads needing to be closed urgently. No matter the status of the road, drive to the conditions.

French Pass

 
 

Our crews put in a massive effort to clear large slips in French Pass following the heavy rain late last week. 

Progress continues on the new retaining wall, 5km from Okiwi Bay on the Croisilles-French Pass Road. Back filling of the wall is in progress and preparation work for the culvert outlet and landscaping is now complete. The crew has begun scour protection and culvert inlet preparation. The traffic lights at this site will be removed once the remedial works have been completed.

Work to install a box culvert and MSE (mechanically stablised earth) wall on Ronga Road continues 10km from the start of the road. With the box culvert installed, excavations for the MSE wall have begun. Work at this site will continue under day time stop/go - Please expect up to 20 minute delays at this site.

Kenepuru Road

 
 

Daytime closures remain on Kenepuru Road, from Onahau Road, Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm. On Fridays the closure will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm. These closures are for the construction of a retaining wall, drainage improvements and road reinstatement, 20km from the start of the road at the Water Tank slip site. 

On Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 of November there will be no lunch time opening - Due to culvert installation works the road will be closed to all traffic from 8am to 5pm. Please refer to the road closure section for further information.

Progress continues on the new retaining wall at Water Tank slip. The wall is taking shape as the team continues to install timber lagging in coordination with waler (horizontal support beams) installation along the face of the wall. As this is being completed they are backfilling the wall in sections. 

The main construction of a new retaining wall near Torea, prior to Portage on Kenepuru Road is complete. Pavement preparations will be completed prior to sealing, which is scheduled for the end of November.

From Monday 2 December work to repair Tara Bay Road will commence. Daytime construction closures will be in place to complete drainage upgrades and road reinstatement works. The road will be closed to all traffic from the start of the road from 7.30am  to 5.30pm. Please refer to the road closure section for further information.

Moetapu Bay

 
 

Daytime construction closures on Moetapu Bay Road, approximately 2km from the start of the road are in place on weekdays from 9am to 3pm with hourly openings.

The work on the road retreat at Driftwood Corner on Moetapu Bay Road was completed last week with sight rails installed and the road sealed. Line marking at this site will be completed in conjunction with the site at Elephant Point. 

This week, excavation and vegetation clearance started for the road retreat, at Elephant Point on Moetapu Bay Road.

Please refer to the road closure section for further information. Work  will be undertaken outside of the closure times, under stop/go traffic management. Please expect delays.

Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

Drainage and road reinstatement work on Moenui Road is no completed and the, road has reopened to all traffic. 

This week work resumed to realign the road 7km from Picton above Whenuanui (Becks Bay). Crews have excavated the new channel alongside the road, installed sight rails and reinstated the pavement.

The installation of a willow brush wall has been completed on Tepuia Heights at the Queen Charlotte Drive end. The team is now working to complete a second wall on the Grove Track. 

Scheduled drainage improvements including multiple culvert installations and road reinstatement works are underway on Tepuia Heights. This work requires construction closures for culvert installations on weekdays from Friday 22 November to Friday 13 December, from 10am to 4pm with a lunchtime opening from 12pm to 12.30pm.

Pelorus

 
 

Work on the rock revertment at Dalton's Bridge was put on hold this week due to high river levels. These works are expected to recommence next week. 

Please expect increased truck movements in the area.

 

 

Waihopai Valley

 
 

The new bridge on Waihopai Valley Road is in the final stages of construction. This week concrete has been poured, all guardrails installed and chorus connection cables have been ducted. 

With the road approaches underway, the team are starting to connect the existing road with the new bridge approach. This work will be carried out under stop/go traffic management over the coming weeks, please plan ahead for minor delays. The current bailey bridge will continue to operate while finishing works are completed.
