On any given day, at (almost) any given time of the year, the Reef Authority’s compliance team is on the water, in the air, and invariably on the job patrolling and preserving Australia’s greatest natural wonder. And Jake Saunders is certainly no exception.

It’s not so much that his role as a senior compliance officer takes him to some of the most remote and spectacular stretches of the Great Barrier Reef. For Jake, it’s simply that there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.

Play is the way

Entries are now open for the Reef Guardian Schools Eco-Challenge where students from participating Reef Guardian Schools are encouraged to explore some of the issues facing the Great Barrier Reef and its connected ecosystems. Submissions for this year’s eco-challenge close on Friday 8 November, leaving plenty of time to get creating.

Small actions, big impact

Stewardship of the Great Barrier Reef is in Ocean Rafting's capable hands. Through the Tourism Reef Protection Initiative, a crew from Ocean Rafting headed to Hayman Island to conduct a beach clean. Master Reef Guide Heath and three other crew scoured the beach for over an hour, collecting four massive bags of debris.

Woppaburra winners

The Woppaburra Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA) Aboriginal Corporation have won at the Queensland Landcare awards. Joined by TUMRA director Jason Ramsamy, Woppaburra took home the First Nations Landcare Collaboration Award. The TUMRA program is a partnership between Traditional Owners, the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

Building on over 60,000 years of historic connection to the land, connection to Country is as important today as it was tens of thousands of years ago. Project Officer Jessie Courtney has lived in many places, but her roots descending from the Butchulla people of K'Gari (Fraser Island) and Erub Island (Darnley Island) in the Torres Strait will always mean home.
