Join us at our community events for Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway.

Kia ora,

Welcome to our first project update of the year – we hope you had a safe and happy holiday.

We have confirmed dates for the first community information days for the Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway project.

Since announcing an emerging preferred corridor late last year, the project team have been busy meeting with property owners to discuss what this might mean for them and to seek their feedback.

We’d now like to share the emerging preferred corridor with the wider community and hear your thoughts on the current plans at this very early stage in the process.

The drop-in sessions, planned for Mata Hall and The Hub Information Centre later this month, will be an opportunity for you to view the emerging preferred corridor, meet members of the project team, get an overview of what’s currently planned and have your questions answered.

Over the next few months, our team will be out in the corridor conducting geotechnical investigations and these, along with further design work, will help to inform the location of the upgraded highway within the preferred corridor (to be confirmed in mid-late 2021).

Meanwhile, further safety improvements – including widened centrelines and road shoulders, rumble strips and safety barriers – are also programmed for this busy stretch of highway. Work is planned to start in the coming months and will take approximately 12 months to complete.

More information about these short-term safety improvements will be available at community information days – we hope you can join us!

Share your thoughts with us

We want to hear from communities within the Whangārei district, regional road users and visitors to Northland on how they move through this section of SH1 so we can make informed decisions on highway design elements.

We welcome your feedback on the emerging preferred corridor and invite you to leave your comments on our interactive mapping tool, Social Pinpoint.

Leave your feedback by dragging a marker and dropping it on the map or join the discussion by responding to other people’s comments.

Click here to visit our Social Pinpoint feedback site.

What happens next?

The next steps for this project are to carry out further technical assessments and ground investigations to confirm the preferred corridor.

Between mid-late 2021, we plan to contact landowners within the preferred corridor to confirm whether or not their property is directly affected and to discuss individual property impacts in greater detail.

We are planning to lodge the Notice(s) of Requirement and resource consent applications in early-2022, followed by procurement for construction and detailed design.

Construction is programmed to begin in late-2023/early-2024.
