Project update: Final surfacing, night works and road closures

10 November 2025

Final surfacing at the southern end of the project, night works and road closures

We’ve reached a major milestone!

This is the first of the final surfacing work for the project and almost the last thing we’ll be doing in the section of Halswell Road between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard.

To get the sealing done efficiently and safely, we’ll be closing parts of Halswell Road and Aidanfield Drive overnight for about a week.

Key details

Where:

  • Halswell Road between Dunbars Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard
  • Aidanfield Drive between Halswell Road and Bibiana Street/Euphrasie Drive.

When:

  • From Sunday 16 November, nightly for about a week
  • Southbound – (heading towards Halswell) 7pm - 7am
  • Northbound (heading towards town) and Aidanfield Drive 6pm - 7am
  • Weather dependent – may extend at short notice.

What to expect:

  • Full road closures during night work hours - no access in or out of affected sections
  • Detours signposted via Halswell Junction Road and Sparks Road
  • Bus routes 60 and 7 will be detoured, there will be info at affected bus stops and at metroinfo.

More details are available on our surfacing works notice

How closing the road and working overnight is paving the way for a smoother journey in more ways than one

Closing Halswell Road and working at night allows us to avoid peak traffic, keeping disruption to a minimum while creating a safer environment for both road users and our crews. It also means we can pave larger sections of road in one go, something that isn’t possible during the day when traffic needs to keep flowing.

If we were to do this work during daylight hours, it would take much longer. We’d be restricted to paving one lane at a time, which would slow everything down. It would also require frequent changes to traffic management layouts, adding complexity and further delays.

Instead, by working overnight and paving wider areas, we can deliver a smoother, more durable surface with fewer joins, improving the overall travel experience for everyone who uses these roads.

Overall it’s more efficient, it’s much safer.

We do acknowledge that overnight work can be noisy for our near neighbours and we apologise for any disruption this may cause.

In our last newsletter we highlighted progress, particularly south of Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard. That’s continued with the new road and kerb now built and most of the temporary traffic management like cones, barriers and lane reductions removed. It's all ready for the final asphalt surface and line-marking.

We’ve also talked about the new stormwater and wastewater systems now largely completed, along with the new water main upgrade between Curletts Road and Templeton Road.

Only about 10 metres of the new stormwater system and a few metres of the new water pipe remain to be installed between Rowley Avenue and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard.

The water main upgrade, a partnership with Christchurch City Council, will boost capacity and reduce leakage. These three pieces of work will provide much improved three waters resilience for both Halswell Road and the wider community.

While temporary traffic management is being reduced in some areas it's still important to follow signs and keep to the 30km/h speed limit through work areas. At times, such as with the recent spring rains we experienced, it may be appropriate to reduce your speed further.

With the A&P Show coming up this week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) there is likely to be an increase in traffic along Halswell Road - you might want to consider taking a different route or add a little more time to your journey.

Please remember to share the road with everyone and give cyclists the space they need.

Enjoy the long weekend and thank you for your patience.

Ngā mihi/kind regards
The Halswell Road project team

The 30km/h temporary speed limit has been removed and 60km/h reinstated on Halswell Road, between Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard and Aidanfield Drive. Please drive to the conditions and respect everyone using the road.

The Halswell Road/Dunbars Road intersection

The intersection is now fully operational with the traffic light and phasing upgrades complete.

Update from Orion

Orion is installing new 66kV and 11kV underground power cables along Sparks Road. This stage of work is expected to finish by mid-this month, with further work early next year to pull the cables through the cable ducts.
