Northern Territory Housing Alliance Established

12 October 2023

The Territory Labor Government is working to make the Northern Territory the easiest place in Australia to build and buy a home.

To make sure we have the right policies and incentives in place to allow for accelerated land release, the Territory Government has today established the Northern Territory Housing Alliance.

The role of the Northern Territory Housing Alliance is to bring together stakeholders from the building, community housing, social services and industry sector to share knowledge, resources and ideas aimed at addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the Territory’s housing sector.

As this week’s report from Master Builders NT showed, the Territory is heading into an investment and jobs boom. This is the perfect time to make sure we’re doing everything we can to attract people to the Territory, and make sure they can build a future here.

Today, the Chief Minister has also announced Mr Allan McGill as the Chair of the NT Housing Alliance, with further board members to follow.

Mr McGill has over 40 years working in local government with extensive leadership and management skills. He is currently the chair of Venture Housing, and holds roles with the NT Planning Commission and NT Heritage Council.

Reporting directly to the Chief Minister, the objectives of the NT Housing Alliance are to provide advice, identify opportunities and suitable land sites to deliver the required increase in housing, provide recommendations for investment initiatives into housing, and advise on policies and supply chains issues relating to housing delivery.

Land development and sub division works are currently occurring right across the Territory. In Greater Darwin there is land currently in the hands of developers with the potential for over 3,600 lots. Land releases in the Greater Holtze area have the potential to produce more than 11,000 additional lots.  Land is also being delivered in Kilgariff in Alice Springs, Chittock Crescent in Tennant Creek and Katherine East.

Quotes attributed to Chief Minister Natasha Fyles:

“The Northern Territory Housing Alliance will be a taskforce of senior industry leaders working with government agencies to share knowledge, data and ideas to bridge the gap between supply and demand.

“They will make recommendations directly to Government to ensure we have the right reforms in place to deliver the confidence and certainty the construction sector needs, and the strong supply of land and homes that the Territory and the country desperately need.

“The great Australian dream might be unachievable everywhere else in the country, but in the Territory we are going to make sure more people can achieve it. The Territory is the place to build your future.”

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“For more homes to be built we need more land. To do this we are implementing the Bringing Land to Market report.

“The Territory Labor Government is working towards creating a steady pipeline of land release for more homes, as our workforce and population grows.

“The expertise that the Northern Territory Housing Alliance will bring will allow us to create more streamlined process to create a more streamlined process for both brownfield and underdeveloped lots.”

Quote attributed to Northern Territory Housing Alliance Chair, Allan McGill:

“The Territory is on the cusp of great economic opportunity. To make sure we maximise this we need the homes for families and new members of our community.

“I am honoured to be taking on the role as Chair of the Northern Territory’s first ever Housing Alliance. Myself, and when the rest of the board is established, will work together to advise government on any blockages and what changes can be made to create faster blocks being turned on and homes built.”
