Tuesday 29 April slip at site A11 - cleaning up material and vegetation. Update on the slip that occurred on Tuesday 29 April 2025Kia ora koutou, State Highway 1 (SH1) Mangamuka Gorge remains closed as contractors continue to clean up material and vegetation at the site of yesterday’s slip. A detour route is in place via State Highway 10. Please plan ahead and allow additional time for your journeys during this period. Crews are working on a plan to safely bring down vegetation above the slip site in a controlled manner tomorrow, with specialist machinery arriving early in the morning to assist with removing loose material. The team had been monitoring movement on the hillside following recent heavy rain, and further movement was expected. The geology and varying terrain through the Mangamuka Gorge means the area will always be susceptible to some movement during severe weather, like what we’ve seen over the past 2-3 weeks. The recent recovery work throughout the gorge was designed in a way that any future movement is expected to be much less severe, ensuring we can respond quickly and minimise disruption to road users. We know any closure of the gorge is disruptive, especially for freight, local businesses, and communities. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to get the road reopened as soon as we are able to do so safely. Visit the NZTA Journey Planner website for the latest information on the closure: www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz Ngā mihi nui. |
