Kia ora koutou

Welcome to this update on the SH10 Kaeo Bridge Safety Improvements project.

We have spent the past 18 months or so working through the various processes that are necessary before beginning a significant construction project:

  • geotech assessments
  • getting the design right
  • resource consent applications
  • property agreements
  • cultural impact assessment
  • archaeological authority application
  • wildlife permit application.

We are working to get a contractor on board and are hopeful construction will get underway before the end of this year.

The project will take approximately two years, including the removal of the old bridge.

Once construction is underway, we will begin sending out monthly project updates.

Design almost complete

Design of the project is almost complete. There will be e a new two-lane bridge across the Kaeo River and a roundabout at the intersection of SH10 and Whangaroa Road to improve traffic flow.

See above and below for 3D images that show how the finished product will look. The planting is representative in these images.

Flood modelling

We have heard concerns about whether the new bridge will worsen the tendency of the area to flood.

The design team spent several months working with Northland Regional Council to ensure we got flood modelling right and that the new bridge will not cause any adverse upstream impacts to Kaeo.

The bridge will be the same height as the previous one so that the embankment at the western end doesn’t need to be higher – this may have created a damming effect when waters are high.

In addition, at 110m, the new bridge will be over twice as long as the old bridge. This means that a larger volume of water will be able to flow underneath it.

Community open day a success

A community open day was held at the Memorial Hall in Kaeo last week.

Around 50 people came through, all very engaged and interested in the project. Designers and engineers were on hand to answer questions and people were able to use a virtual reality headset to cross the bridge (or fall in the river in some cases).

You can view or download the information produced for the open day on our website.
