The Month Ahead: What have we done and what is coming up?

Over the past few weeks, the contractor Downer has been carrying out what is called enabling works.  This is the preparation work that a contractor undertakes before they start construction.  You will have noticed the noise walls and other works occurring along SH1.

Before actual construction started, the team had the site blessed by a Te Parawhau Kaumatua.  This blessing helps to ensure a successful project and provides workers on site with an additional layer of protection.

On Friday 15th September, Stephen Collett, NZ Transport Agency’s Portfolio Manager, Councillor Greg Martin, Whangarei District Council, and John Bain, Northland Regional Council, turned the first sod on the SH1/Tarewa Road intersection improvements project, a symbolic gesture formally marking the start of construction.

What have we done?

August and September

• We have built several new acoustic fences, to help reduce road noise for residents.

• The project team have been planning the relocation of overhead cables. These will eventually be placed underground in a dedicated ‘services trench’ reducing the likelihood of faults and disruptions.

• Vegetation clearance is underway on some properties to allow the team to complete enabling works.

•  As the new bridge will pass through number 60 Otaika Road we have started preparing the house for demolition.
This involves carefully removing materials, vegetation and readying the property for when we begin to build the new Raumanga Stream Bridge.

What will we do?

October

• North Power will temporarily relocate a number of power poles and overhead cables.

• 60 Otaika Road will be demolished to allow for the new bridge to be built.

• Continue construction of the new acoustic fences on properties along Tarewa Road.

• Begin building the western side of the new Otaika Bridge which will include excavating the area, installing both temporary works and the piles needed to support the bridge.

•  Start digging the new trench for underground services in Tarewa Park.
