Celebrating 30 years

Our first newsletter of 2024 celebrates our 30 exceptional years of driving research, shaping policies and advocating for addressing inequities in children’s health, development and wellbeing within a generation.

On Thursday 21 March we hosted a Festschrift for Prof Frank Oberklaid. Many local and international speakers shared heartfelt stories of the enduring impact of Frank’s mentorship, knowledge and visionary leadership on them and their efforts to improve equity and children’s health and wellbeing.

The following day, we celebrated the Centre’s 30th Anniversary. The program celebrated our rich and diverse partnerships, the innovative research and programs they are supporting, and collaborations that are making a difference to the lives of children. You’ll find many of these initiatives featured in our 30th Anniversary booklet and redeveloped website.

This edition includes:

  • Highlights from the World Hearing Day event hosted by VicCHILD, including a wonderful video featuring VicCHILD ambassador Hasas
  • Recorded sessions from the Centre’s 30th Anniversary program, including presentations from keynote speakers Naomi Eisenstadt CB who led the initial Sure Start implementation in the UK, and Dr Nat Kendall-Taylor from the Frameworks Institute in the USA
  • The welcome address from the Festschrift
  • Dr Anna Price’s article, ‘Too many Aussies are starting a family and raising their kids in poverty'

While we have much to celebrate, there remains much to do to achieve more equitable and supportive environments for children and their families. Reflecting on our progress has provided a fantastic opportunity to draw energy for what will continue to be a busy year. As we enthusiastically embark on the next phase of our work, I look forward to the opportunity to partner with you for greater impact as we strive to achieve our vision, ‘Every child thrives’.

Director
