SH73 West Melton intersection improvements - looking forward and looking back

Kia ora and season’s greetings

As we get to the end of the year we would like to let you know what work is planned for the new year - including work starting on 9 January, look at what else needs to be done next year to complete the project and recap on the progress to date.

But firstly, we would like to thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding - we’re sorry for the disruption this year and the disruption that will occur next year.

Wishing you happy holidays and safe travels.

Ngā mihi (Kind regards)

The project team

Work planned for the new year:

The week of 9 January

This is the first week back and the team is going to take advantage of traditionally light traffic volumes to do possibly the most disruptive construction work as far as the impact on road users is concerned.

This is the rebuild of the SH73/Weedons Ross Road south intersection. This work involves substantial excavation and construction of new road pavement.

Traffic impacts:
From Monday 9 January for a week, traffic on SH73 will be restricted to one lane and the intersection of Weedons Ross Road south with SH73 will be closed.  The one lane on SH73 will be controlled with temporary traffic lights to allow two way traffic on SH73 (see map of the temporary traffic management system below).

Sign detours will be in place. See detour routes map here

From Monday 16 January

Following the reconstruction of the intersection described above, the bulk of the remaining work is on Weedons Ross Road and West Melton Road to the south of SH73, including the construction of the new roundabout on Weedons Ross Road at the intersection of Kingsdowne Drive and the new link road.

Traffic impacts

  • From Monday 16 January for two weeks, the northern entrance to Kingsdowne Drive will be closed.
  • From Monday 16 January for five weeks, the new link road will be closed.

Two way traffic will be reinstated on West Melton Road and Weedons Ross Road during this time with some sections on both roads temporarily controlled with traffic lights (see map of the temporary traffic management system below).

We’ll ensure access for emergency services is maintained.

The final push to completion

This is not to say there is no work to complete on SH73 as the approaches to the intersection need some reconstruction, but this is relatively straight forward compared to the work already undertaken.

The most obvious piece of work to do is the installation of the traffic signals themselves and all the associated controlling equipment.  Towards the end of the work programme the entire site will receive final surfacing and road marking prior to the traffic signals becoming operational.

This is all on programme to be completed by end of April/early May next year.

Landscape planting will be undertaken in winter next year (June to September), to give the planting the best chance to successfully establish rather than planting over summer.

Overview of progress to date

All the work required to allow the main intersection work to progress was completed over the winter period.

This included the piping of the stock water race, the relocation of Chorus and Vodafone services, the installation of the new water mains and the undergrounding of the Orion services required for relocating other services, and the early road paving work.

We were also able to progress the new road linking Weedons Ross Rd and West Melton Rd sufficiently to be able to put traffic on it which allowed other areas of the site to be worked on.

Since spring, and with the improving weather, the team has been able to progress stormwater drainage, kerbing, lighting, removal of power poles, road paving and shared path works.

Over the last couple of weeks of the year the focus has been on getting the work site to a stage where we can make as much of the road and shared paths available as possible over the Christmas / New Year holiday period while also removing as much of the temporary traffic management as possible.
