Final surfacing starts this weekend

Final surfacing of the new motorway over the full length (Halswell Junction Road to Rolleston), starts this Sunday 8 November and will continue through to the end of February 2021.

A staged process

Applying the final road surface is a 2-stage process; the first being the application of a chip seal layer (starting on Sunday) which will be completed progressively in around six weeks.

The second stage will start in January 2021, when the final low-noise asphalt will also be laid progressively, within a similar time-frame.

The motorway is open

Most work will take place overnight between 7pm and 6am. There may be short-term, intermittent closures where road space is restricted. We will give you a heads up closer to the time.

The motorway will stay open, however traffic will often be single lane with speed restrictions where work is underway. The locations will vary as work progresses along the motorway length.

Immediately following the application of chip seal, a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place.

The road will reopen to two lanes with speed restrictions each morning, by 6am.

It is very important all motorists follow the sign-posted speed limits and increase their travelling distances between vehicles.

As the road surface matures, any residual chip will be swept off the road and the line marking reinstated. The speed limit will be increased accordingly.

Work will be completed in approximately 3km to 5km sections in both directions per week. For example, 3km of citybound road will be chipsealed and 3km of southbound road will be chipsealed each week.

We'll keep you updated

Surfacing work (including chip sealing, line marking and asphalting) is extremely dependant on the weather and air temperature. This will have an effect on our schedule of work, however we will do our very best to keep you updated.

Thank you for your patience during the final stages of construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 Project.
