SH25 Thames Coast update – January 2019

Further work needed to protect SH25

In the wake of the January 2018 storm, the NZ Transport Agency installed protective rock walls at Te Mata, Ngarimu and Thornton Bays to prevent further damage to SH25.

Now we’re looking to develop a permanent solution, one which provides some protection for the road and houses from storm damage and erosion, but allows residents and visitors access to the beach.

We’ve worked with a specialist coastal engineer to develop some ideas as to how we can achieve this and we’d like to hear your thoughts on what we’re proposing for these areas.

Once we’ve identified some proposed solutions we will need to seek funding approval for this project as it has not yet been confirmed.

You can look through the options and share your views with us by going to our website. We also have a downloadable form which you can print, fill in and send back to us at coromandel@nzta.govt.nz or to the postal address which is included.

Please send your feedback to us by Friday 22 February.

What else is happening on SH25/SH25A

We have now completed a number of projects on SH25/SH25A that will help make the road more resilient to the effects of storms and heavy rain. The following projects will be getting underway in the next few months:

  • Boundary Creek and Kereta Coast, a rock wall in each location to protect against erosion. Both of these are expected to begin construction in February.
  • Kuaotunu Hill, retaining walls at three sites including a coastal footpath. Work is expected to start in April.

In addition to this there is about 5km of seal repairs on SH25 north of Thames and around 12km of resurfacing on the remainder of SH25 between Manaia and Waihi scheduled for the summer.
