Welcome to the May 2020 Construction Update

Story
Story

The Southern Corridor Improvements project was put on hold during the COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown. Work is now ramping back up, under a range of safety measures designed to protect workers and the public from any potential spread of COVID-19.

The construction team is now firmly focused on the remaining project tasks - laying the final epoxy-modified open grade porous asphalt (EMOGPA) surfacing on the motorway, completing the Great South Road-Takanini Interchange and building community connections through the walking and cycling pathway.

Here is the latest on what’s been happening across the project recently and what we have left to complete this year.

Final road surfacing resumes

Preseal works were undertaken all along the southbound lanes prior to the COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown, in preparation for final surfacing. Old lighting foundations and redundant services were removed, barriers moved and final ducting installed.

Final surfacing works have restarted on the northbound side from Takanini to Manukau and will continue on the southbound side, south of Takanini.  Weather, construction issues and COVID-19 safety measures permitting, final surfacing on the northbound lanes from Papakura to Takanini will be completed within the coming months.

Local residents have already noted a distinct reduction in the noise made by passing traffic, due to the noise-dampening qualities of the epoxy-modified open grade porous asphalt (EMOGPA) being used.

Final lane marking will be completed after the EMOGPA has been laid.

Work resumes on walking and cycling pathway

More recreational areas are being developed along the walking and cycling pathway linking Papakura to Takanini and the communities in between.

Much of the concrete has been poured for the pathway that connects Papakura to Takanini and local communities, and work has restarted on linking the sections together. Bridge works have resumed on the footbridge over the motorway at Pescara Point and the pathways that will link it to the surrounding areas.

Work will shortly recommence on the installation of pool-style fencing between the pathway and the motorway, and on specially-designed balustrading for the pathway’s bridge sections crossing the water at Pahurehure Inlet.

Work resumes on Takanini Interchange and Great South Road improvements

Work on Great South Road had been in full swing when halted by the COVID-19 lockdown.

Crews are now being remobilised to continue and complete work on the southbound Takanini on-ramp slip lane and the off-ramp exits onto Great South Road in both directions.

Great South Road and the interchange ramps will be completed and given their final seal later in 2020.

Lighting improvements, stormwater treatment, landscaping and urban design features will also be completed.

Update on project completion

While work has restarted on the SCI project, the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the completion date for the project is not yet known.

The project’s completion programme is currently being reviewed, taking account of the pandemic, the loss of a significant portion of the main summer construction season, operating restrictions and resource constraints under current Alert levels, and the fast-approaching winter weather.  We are therefore not able to announce revised completion timeframes just yet, but hope to include them in a future update.
