Delays this weekend - be ready for traffic changes

Starting this weekend, one lane of a new section of highway in the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 Project, will be opening in stages to citybound traffic.

A single, citybound lane will be opening from this Sunday, with temporary speed limits in place.

  • To prepare for the opening, night works will start on Friday 29 May at the Halswell Junction Interchange

  • On Sunday 31 May, the new citybound on-ramp at the Halswell Junction Road Bridge and one lane (citybound) opens to traffic heading toward the city. Access to the motorway citybound via John Paterson Drive roundabout will close permanently

  • From Monday 1 June, the citybound on-ramp at the Shands Road Interchange and one lane (citybound) opens to traffic heading toward the city.

The staged opening of these sections will allow the project team to complete final parts of the project over the next five months.

This work will be weather dependent.

Detour in place for citybound traffic on Springs Road

While motorists become familiar with the new layout, we expect delays during peak travel times around the Springs Road/Halswell Junction Road area for a couple of weeks.

Please be ready for delays, particularly from Tuesday 2 June, once normal traffic is back on the road following the long weekend.

Citybound traffic will be detoured during peak hours – 7am to 10am and again from 4pm to 7pm.

The sign-posted detour will take motorists to the citybound on-ramp at the Shands Road Interchange.

This is the best way to access the motorway for citybound traffic.

Cyclist and Pedestrians

Cyclists and pedestrians are not permitted on the motorway.

Please follow all on-site directional signage showing alternative routes.

A shared-use path linking the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 cycle/pedestrian shared path with the existing Little River Rail Trail is in the final stages of construction and scheduled to open later next month.

Crews will be back in the new year to lay the final low-noise asphalt surfacing.

Thank you for your on-going patience during the final stages construction of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 project.
